Did this man’s tummy bug change the course of British Politics?

November 25th, 2004

For sometime now we’ve been meaning to draw users attention to the extraordinary internet book by the polling blogger, operator of UK Pollingreport and regular contributor to Politicalbetting, Anthony Wells.

It’s called “What if Gordon Banks had played” and is a fun-packed counterfactual political history of the 1970s based on the premise that Banks played in the quarter-final of the 1970 World Cup three days before the General Election that ended Harold Wilson’s Government and saw Edward Heath’s Tories win the election. Would Labour have held on if England had won?

If you’ve got a couple of hours to spare this is well worth reading.

What’s this got to do with political betting you might ask? Well it shows how little it takes to turn an entire election and it’s a reminder that elections are not always foregone conclusions.

Latest Labour seat prices:-
360 + 11/10
0 - 335 7/4
352 - 359 11/2
344 - 351 6/1
336 - 343 7/1

  1. Readers should be warned it\’s hard to stop reading once you\’ve started. Or maybe that just says something about me.

\”Fun-packed\” is a little sadistic though Mike!

  2. Well done, Anthony!

  3. Well, that was the early night that was! Riveting stuff…can\’t wait for the movie.

  4. …Now I can\’t sleep (the thought of Harvey Proctor as Chief Secretary!), so tapped into the net edition of the Telegraph, where there is a commentary by Tony King on what appears to be the latest YouGov poll that has Labour 35%, Conservative 32%, LibDem 23% and UKIP 5%. Perhaps, this is just a bad dream…

  5. Good stuff ;-)

I\’m not sure about \”no plans to publish, since it\’s free online and probably libellous\” though! It\’s probably not the best idea to have too many people linking to it then ;-)

Oh and why is it that virtually NOBODY on the internet can spell the word \”LOSE\”?

  6. Oh don\’t start looking for spelling mistakes in the thing, there are hundreds, hundreds of them.

  7. Hey, guys, don\’t be picky - like, you and I don\’t ever post things with typos in them?

  8. No - my spelling really is atrocious!

  9. It\’s alright I\’m not. Lose is just a pet peeve. It\’s so strangely common, I\’m convinced it\’s something about writing on computers that results in people spelling it \”loose\”.

  10. I found it absolutely rivetting.

Guess who I was rooting for throughout?!

  11. West Germany?

  12. Brilliant BV

  13. Ive been recommending this page to friends for months - hadn\’t realised who wrote it though - its great, very amusing.

  14. Yes, I\’d only recently connected it to Ant. I found it by accident while googling for the exact dates of the 1974 elections (or something), leading to a few seconds of utter confusion, leading to \”Are you smoking crack?! There wasn\’t an election in July 1974\”, and then finally I understood and appreciated.

Anthony, have you made any other forays into alternate histories?
