Happy Christmas from Politicalbetting
December 24th, 2004
Mike Smithson & Robert Smithson
Thanks to all our users and forum contributors for all you have done in the past nine months. The discussions are great and we’ve managed to create a community of activists and others interested in politics from almost the full gambit of UK parties where these matters can be discussed and debated in a calm non-confrontational manner. It all bodes well for the General Election campaign.
Good betting.

Thanks - I am glad I found your site.
Happy Christmas to you both and all contributors (even the Tories!)
Mike - nice to put a face to a name - great site - Happy Christmas to you both and the other commentators.
Mike, Robert,
Congratulations on a great site, and in your maintenance of a great on-line community (which, when we’re all talking politics from every viewpoint, should be theoretically impossible!).
Merry Christmas!
Have to agree with all the above the site is fantastic. I never cease to be amazed by the level of knowledge displayed by yourself and so many of your contributors. Hope everyone has a great Christmas and a drink-fuelled Hogmanay!
Mike - ecgoes to all the above. THis site is adictive, I stumbled across it in September whilst Googling on the Hartlepool by-election and now spend a large portion of the day checking out the latest. Its convinced me to become an activist. Part of the problem these days is that one just doesn’t talk about politics in everyday life, so this has enabled my latent interest to blossom and made me realise I’m not alone, as it were.
Looking forward to the months to come …
Having known these two when they lived in Bedford 10-12 years ago and helped in Mike’s election campaign for the Bedford seat in 1992, I had to take a step back when I saw the photo
Depending on your point of view, Robert has got either worringly or gratifyingly like Mike
Happy New Year guys and I like the t-shirt Robert
PS Steve Lawson is coming round tonight so I’ve stocked up on the plonk
Tim - the real inspiration for the site came from the Sunday night get-togethers over a couple of pints at the Swan in Bedford that I had with Steve Lawson and others over the years. The conversation was just like Politicalbetting is now.
Re: ‘the full gambit of UK parties’: I suggest you mean ‘the gamut of UK parties’; OD says ‘gamut = (4) the whole scale, range or compass of a thing (1626)’. Many thanks for a most interesting site.
mike, I think your site is wonderful, marvellous, etc and your onsite Chrimbo card must be a comfort to the contibutors (I nearly said punters, but that would be too unkind as some of them are quite sensitive flowers). Beware though the personality cult - is it true St Tony will have his head on all our new pennies in 2005?
Success to your arm (but not your football team) in 2005 - thanks for your acknowledgement of Bedford as the font of all wisdom.
Brutus - Who r u ? I’m guessing a reprobate in Bedford who I call Bruce ?
The stuff on this web site is really witty and cool wise
I’d just like to thank you for taking the time to create this internet website. It has been extremely helpful
