Have you booked for next Saturday’s party?

June 17th, 2005

An evening to see the faces behind the names

Everything is now set for the Politicalbetting Post-General Election Party which takes place at a pub in Central London next Saturday night.

Thanks to the generous sponsorship from IG Index and one or two other people who have made donations we have enough in the budget to pay for the room hire and the the food. Hopefully there will be enough left over for at least one free drink for every attendee.

Those who have indicated that they will be there have been sent an email. If you have not received yours or have not booked yet then please send a message as soon as possible to book_value@hotmail.co.uk

The event has been organised by Book-value (Philip) and I’m really grateful to him and those who have contributed and have made this get together possible.

Every user of the site is welcome to the event. It’s not just restricted to those who contribute to the discussions so please come along if you can.

It promises to be a very interesting evening. We start at about 6pm and food will be available from 7pm.

  1. There is a theory that there are only three contributors to PB.com using a variety of different aliases. Come and prove me wrong. I will be there with my dad Daedalus.

  2. Icarus. In fact there are only two contributors. One is called Tabman, and one is called Jack W.
At least it is like that most days…

  3. I take exception to that - I know I’m at least three people :-)

  4. Ah, Paul Llooyd! Well I think we all know who you are.

Come out Robert Waller, we’ve seen though your disguise!

  5. 2, Peter . Oh Sh*t you’ve twigged I’m Mike Smithson and 63 other characters and Tabman is my son Robert and he plays 69 ! Who the bloody hell are you !……anyway we’re going to have a bloody good p*ss up between the two of us at the party , and the rest of you can bug*er off !!

  6. Close Jack - but so very far away :-)

  7. Peter - I once thought Tabman was the invention of Richard Willis - but then I met him and he was definitely himself - but was I me? Unforunately I cannot attend the party to prove or disprove my existence - but some of my other personalities are going. Is Rik going - surely he wants to meet some of his tormentors in person - but if Icarus is right there will only be 2 people sharing a packet of cheese Wotsits and a Bacardi Breezer - not the vibrant throbbing event our Richard would want to be seen at.

  8. 7 , Paul . Au contraire mon ami the generous sponsorship from IG Index , Honest Gianfranco’s Family Turf Accountants and Jeffery Archer will ensure copius quantities of Dom Perignon and lentil and prune quiche……plus two straws . So hard luck suckers !!!!!

  9. Paul Lloyd - you are Graham and I claim my five pounds …

  10. I will give you £10 if you can prove it Andy. I thought I was Jack W.

  11. And if conversation flags we can always discuss which party is most likely to propose this law in its next manifesto:

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/europe/4100140.stm

  12. 11. I see the Libdems proposing it.
Maybe the Greens have already it in their manifesto.

  13. 11 , Innocent Abroad . I don’t know what you mean it’s already law in The People’s Diversity and Equality Republic of Islington South and Finsbury !

  14. See - I could have made that last comment.

  15. See - I could have made that last comment

  16. And I did.

  17. did’nt I .

  18. But , if it was me . And I am not sure that it was . How comes I am no longer who I thought I was . And will I meet myself at the party ?

All I know is that I am not Paul Lloyd , and the other person posting as me must be an imposter . Unless I am . I’m so confused that I should seek out Printz’s darkened room . Unless Printz is actually not real either , and is actually Andy Cooke ( with which I will claim my £5 ) .

  19. 13.” it’s already law in The People’s Diversity and Equality Republic of Islington South and Finsbury ! ”

It’s no more a Republic, now Chris Smith is a Lord (how did they call him? Baron Smith of Islington?).

  20. Paul Lloyd and Jack W - that’s nothing… when I lived in Stoke Newington in the 80s my ex-wife was horrified to discover how much work was involved in changing every other nappy :)

  21. 11 - This might encourage a chap to get married in church, if I have read the article correctly. Interesting idea though.

  22. 4, exactly what do you mean by “come out”?!

  23. I am sorry I cannot come alone, but I wish everyone a happy time next Saturday.

  24. Mr Waller, profoundest apologies. I was implying you were Paul Lloyd, not that you were hiding in the closet! Your tardy reply has forced me to review my opinion. After hours of textual analysis I now believe that Paul Lloyd is actually A H Matlock.

  25. 24 - You think what!?!?

  26. A.H.Matlock -
Don’t worry about it - apparently I am Printz today.
(It’s like Stars in their Eyes, today)…

Paul Lloyd - the only cause of my suspicion was that we know that Graham has used “Paul” before - it was his “Tory baiting pseudonym”

(understandable as he works professionally in the industry - it underlines the separation between his professional comments and his “other” comments :) )

I fully accept that you are Jack W. Or maybe Icarus. Possibly Rik. Probably not Sarah.

    Almost certainly not me …

  27. 26 - WRT to Graham using ‘Paul’ for Tory baiting - doesn’t surprise me. Always did think it was a bit rich of him to think that he could bash us in one paragraph and go on to assert his objectivity and independence in the next, and then get angry when someone called him out on it.

  28. Excuse my slip at 23! I’m sure Freud would have something to say. I am by the way the real Printz! No I’m not. Yes we are…

  29. First time I have had a look here in ages and I find myself the subject of a conversation. Fantastic nice to see I am still loved (or was it loathed).

Re: bashing tories - I said that I didn’t think the tories were able to get out of the 32-34% box that they had been in for years - and that the Liberal Democrat vote would hold up at beyond 21%. That was my argument all along and for that I was chastised beyond belief. Well Alastair et al - ‘professionally’ I was spot on (note we were also the most accurate opinion pollster wrt our area - 10 days out and we got the South West right). My vociferousness against tories was sheerly out of frustration.

This led me to the use of the character name ‘Paul’ after I realised that the character name ‘Sarah J’, was fictious - there were a number of inconsistencies in the way ’she’ acted that made me suspicious. For a start ’she’ didn’t seem to have a consistent style and secondly ’she’ was ill defined - sometimes sounding like a new Margret Thatcher, sometimes a ’student’.

And ’she’ had a particular gripe about me - describing me in some fairly odious ways. So I had an idea for revenge wrt a couple of people I thought maybe behind ‘her’ who was ‘Paul’. But ‘Paul’ lasted about 2 posts as I cocked it up as Andrew Milne so rightly points out. And then I couldn’t be bothered.

As for Paul Lloyd, I have no idea as to who he is, and whether he is real or not. But I think the whole episode goes to show the danger of this kind of thing on the net. I came on with a genuine desire to be objective and to talk about what was going on in the South West and trying to concentrate on logical arguments to that effect ended up with this.

  30. I’m Tabman and so’s my wife …

  31. I’m Spartacus …

  32. No, I’m Spartacus

  33. As I may have said before, London is, alas, too far and too expensive for me.

But if the East Midlands contingent want to organise a meet-up (or booze up) in Nottingham, you can almost certainly count me in for that.

The remaindered bookshop in Nottingam remains good - I got Stephen Graubard’s ‘The Presidents’ there for £10 on Saturday (compared with £30 RRP).

  34. [30] You’re not Tabman, You’re a very naughty boy..

Sarah J was the Conservative Central Office Interns.

“And tonight Matthew, I’m going to be AH Matlock”

  35. 34 - I am Sarah J, right down to the sharpened points of my 10″ stillettoes …. but only at weekends.

  36. Sorry folks , but I have to advise you that I am not able attend the thrash of the year , I’ll still be in the States. Indeed my friends, your noble correspondent will not now return until Monday . Amongst the wailing and the nashing of teeth at my absence and no doubt the cheering of some , may I very cordailly hope you all have a wonderful time and try and keep out of the Sunday papers.

For those of you hoping I would take my lap-top with me , I say this. She who must be obeyed would undoubtedly at our next outdoor cooking extravagaza place the soft dangly collection of items between ones thighs on a griddle…….sizzle……sizzle…….

While I’m away please try and ensure that Rik and Tabman don’t throw their toys out of their prams too often……and enjoy the Staffs South election (unlikely). Farewell I shall return…………..

  37. 36 - Jack, what a load of tosh!!!! When have I ever thrown toys out of the pram? Please cite examples. I have a bundle of joy to do that for me - PB.com provides an oasis of reasoned, rarified adult conversation in my otherwise juvenile existence. :?

Sorry - imitating other people’s styles is quite an effort and I’m going to stop now. Or maybe I won’t . Perhaps I’ll mimic someone else’s style .

    Reply: oh no I won’t.

    Oh yes I will!!!!

[That’s enough mimicry b*ll*cks - Ed. aka Mike]

  38. Apologies I didn’t realise the site didn’t say where the party was. If someone could email me the venue at gavin_baylis@yahoo.co.uk in time that would be great (can’t email from a Library computer now). Thanks very much. Would be great to meet you all tomorrow.
