Double Carpet
Re BBC coverage;
For the last two local elections, early on the night itself, the BBC has called it that the Tories aren’t doing well, only for their position to gradually get better and better through the night and into the following day. For instance last year, NOBODY at the BBC predicted on election night that by the end of the next day the Conservatives would have nearly 900 extra councillors. So, you really do have to keep these early comments from the “usual suspects” in perspective.
I almost feel sorry for Tessa J as she gamely attempts to polish a massive turd.
If we have won Nuneaton something is afoot. Labout have held that council FOR EVER!!!
2 gains for BNP in Nuneaton is worrying
Patriots take two seats in Nuneaton.
big move back to ken on betfair
Lib dems making gains from Labour in Knowsley but losing seats in Liverpool.
Anthony King: ” Awful for Labour”
3 for 34 years!
1 BBC listening to you.
King “looking like a truly awful night for Labour”
6. Yes, Boris has drifted from 1.14 earlier to 1.22 now.
8, 10: Blimey, must be bad.
In all the years of watching Election Nights, I’ve never heard that one from King!
Con gain Elmbridge from NOC. 1 gain from LD (Long Ditton) 3 gains from Res Assocs in Walton and Hersham. Kelvin McKenzie fails to unseat Con in Weybridge.
Rowan Cole aged 20 gains Walton Central for Con.
C 32 out of 60 (seats up from 28).
Res Assocs continued to poll well in all areas except Walton & Hersham where they seem to have lost the plot.
C regain an authority which most would expect to be C, but has been NOC/Res Assoc majority/C minority since early 1990s.
Iain Dale reports that the Conservatives have won control of Elmbridge for the first time in more than 20 years. John O will be pleased…
I cannot be bothered with the BBC. Sky are, as ever, far superior.
Impressive result in Sunderland.
Any word from either Boris or Leavingtoday since the polls closed?
I reckon we will have over 200 gains tonight. Time for the champagne at CCHQ and for Samantha to get a tape measure.
14. Alastair! Welcome back from The Lurking!
Con gain new brighton ward from Lab in Wirral
Hold Castle Point.
re 6 Yes, I cannot fathom this market today. Boris started at about 1.35 IIRC. Reasonable. Then drifted close to 1.5 - no reason I could see. Then in below 1.2, though I didn’t see much significant new news. Now easing…
18 - Thanks, Julian. I couldn’t resist a comment or two on Election night….
17. But from who and from where?
What would election night be without Jon Culshaw?
Interesting.
Haha Culshaw can’t do Cameron either!!
19 - New Brighton gone Tory?
I’d never have thought that a Tory prospect…
1 Con gain in Norwich (now 5 seats)
14 AHM. John O asked for my endorsement in Hersham and wider Elmbridge and I was pleased to confer Jacobite blessings on his efforts. It seems the good burghers of Surrey took heed !!
I see from ConHome 8 tory gains in Southampton and 1of 3 necessary gains in Bury
2nd final estimate:
Cons +225
Lab -185
14 - I’m sure he will be. All the more for Kelvin McKenzie failing to win. The man is the biggest bawbag in British public life (Kelvin not John O). If you’ll excuse the phrase!
SHOCK NEWS
Con hold Runnymede. Retain all 36 seats on the council.
Is this where Ave It hails from?
John Culshaw doing funny voices! Ha Ha Ha! They don’t do that every single year do they!
OK Ave it goes sensible!
————————
I remember in 1986 when I was 20 and Labour getting excited by the sort of parliamentary seat extrapolations based on local elections (Lab gain Bath!) and of course was disappointed in 87 and 92.
Now I’m Con and old (41) I know local elections dont matter a fu** even tho we are creaming Labour, so dont get excited!
Even tho
- first win in nuneaton since 67
- LDs = LOL mark senior
- Con have won every London constituency seat
Still some work to be done
Conservative = Real patriots f**k off BNP
Iain Dale reports Lib Dem Council Leader in Pendle loses seat to Tories. That’s good…
20 - the locals really listened to Bob Spink then!!
Bill Rammell certain P45 - fortunately will find alternative employment a lot easier than other defeated Labour MPs IMHO
29. Are they not going to fall short in Bury?
Maybe i heard that wrong.
34 - all about varying the asterisks to avoid the ban
Mike - wheres Casino - you havent banned him have you????
re 17 I don’t think Samantha need rush. My tentative view since the New Year that election will be 2010 is firming up by the hour.
Good to see you back AHM.
A betting question - if this is so bad for Labour, how much will their seats market sink?
I’ve got money saying they’re going down below 250 seats by the weekend.
35 - going through Pendle in a month’s time, good news from the bellweather of bellweathers
Did my ears deceive me or did King just say this will be “a pretty good night for the Tories”?!!!
No, I’m sure he did say it…
Now King says it could be a ‘pretty good night for the tories’ - the pain on his face as he said it made me feel quite sorry for the old boy
estimate: Cons +247, Lab -238
Poor poor Tessa, she looks like she’s losing the will to live! With good reason I suppose!
Lab hold Kersal Ward and Winton in Salford. Community Action gain Irlam from Lab in Salford
32 HAHAHAHA Ruislip Northwood with emphasis on the latter is my HOMELAND!!!!
42/43 B()gger - was watching SKy and missed it.
Tessa, floundering!!
17 councils declared, 32 gains, 159 on the night - 32/17*159 = approx 300 gains - if only life were so simple!
Jeremy Vine is a cowboy.
46 - is Kersal a Tory target? Rings a bell from last year, they came within a whisker of taking it if i recall.
Jeremy Vine…. oh good god
Jeremy Vine is on crack
Oh God - Vine really is a cowboy now - was only joking earlier.
You must watch it on BBC
Get Jeremy Vine off our screens purleeeeeease
Con hold Lincoln according to Sky!
BBC coverage embarrassing. What the f*** are those graphics that Vine is playing with. Awful.
oh god just when you thought Vine couldn’t get worse….
Birmingham-Springfield ward: LD hold in 3 way LD/Lab/Respect marginal
18/36, up to 159*2 = 308 gains now!!
6,11,21 Probably some profit taking and insurance buying, after all, not a single vote has yet been actually counted!
Has Vine just pitched up from a fancy dress party?
Jeremy, do the right thing with that gun.
Love,
61 million people
I am offended by the fact that I paid a license fee in return for this utter trash.
And just when you thought Vine couldn’t sink to a lower depth we get a dreadful comedy ‘western’ voice.
Seriously the man has absolutely no shame.
40 - Thanks kindly, Baskerville.
This BBC coverage really is quite appalling, isn’t it?
I can’t believe what I’m seeing on BBC now! Jeremy Vine the cowboy! Dear God!
Con gain Southampton! (Sky again)
The Jeremy Vine thing is just totally cringeworthy!
Con gain Southampton
What the hell is Vine doing now?
This children’s television at 12.45 am
Was the “Clegg Cowboy” sequence the worst ever on BBC election night? - thought “Ming’s Bling” was bad…. this is cringeworthy.
A career has just ended…
68 That is astonishing! Southampton!
PAGING MARK SENIOR
can I have my £10 now please and a promise you’ll stop your barking extrapolations from by-elections to prove imminent LD takeover?
Gains from both Labour and the Lib Dems. Happy days.
69 - Sounds like I’m not missing much on the BBC.
Vine and the BBC are absolutely awful. Indescribably bad. What the hell is the point of this?
This is turning into an unbelievably good night for the Conservatives? Can Brown survive this?
I’ve always supported and defended the BBC - but I just had to switch off the election night coverage when Vine came on as a cowboy. This is puerile and pathetic. Please give us some grownup political coverage
I’m a lurker that pretty much never posts here, but I have to comment on this appalling BBC coverage. I’m about ready to switch off and rely entirely on PB and the blogs..
77. You are! Has to be seen to be believed!
58 bring back peter snow all time no 1 presenter
Hazel Blears fronting it out well - I remember 11 years ago as Lab being pleased with her huge swing somewhere in manchester.
But now Con gain worldwide (in a realistic way)
38. CON GAIN SOUTHAMPTON!!!!!!!!!!
LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
300+ GAINS - WOOHOOOOO!!!!!!!!!
I’m sure Jack W can put together a fine montage / compilation of cringeworthy Beeb election moments for us tomorrow when the dust has settled - come on Jack!
OMG. Vine.
Just had to switch the tv off. Thank god for the internet. Jeremy Vine is appaling.
The C gain of Southampton - with 8 gains! - is significant - given two Labour rather distant marginals in parliament
TORIES GAIN SOUTHAMPTON with 7 seat gain?
Wow!
Estimate, Cons +318 Lab -2248
Anthony calling Tories’ Southampton gain ’sensational’.
I seriously don’t understand the BBC’s coverage. The people who watch the 8 o’clock news ’strand’ (actualy just happen to be watcing while they wait for EastEnders) are now all safely all in bed so why the Fisherprice/Tomy coverage?
King “Southampton a sensational victory for the Conservatives”
this is owrking up to a fantastic night.
Still there, Tyson??
2 more Con gains from Lab in Wirral
89 Correction: Estimate, Cons +318 Lab -248
88 - 8 gains from all over the shop
83. I love you.
Why weren’t you a Tory in the 80s?
LOL!
I predict… 350+ gains for the Conservatives.
Oh yeah and the immortal phrase:
CON GAIN LONDON!!!!!
But remember:
“We have the best television in the world”
“Only a licence fee can guarantee public service broadcasting”
etc etc.
What a total farce.
LD set to lose St Michaels to the Greens in Liverpool
From Politics Home
00:45 Preston stays NOC, Conservatives gain Elmbridge, hold Walsall
00:45 Jeremy Vine puts on cowboy hat and starts shooting graphics on BBC
00:40 Conservatives hold West Oxfordshire, Labour hold Wigan
00:39 Conservatives gain Elmbridge from NOC
00:37 Conservatives now predicting 200+ gains
What are the odds on Brown being booted out in 2008? I think I will be rolling my Boris winnings onto that. He can’t survive this kind of kicking, surely.
Hazel Blears on Sky pointing out how terrible 2004 was without realising what she’s saying.
LD hold Eastleigh
Best news I’ve heard tonight is that the Salford councillor who is masterminding the Greater Manchester Congestion Charge scam has just lost his seat.
No prizes for guessing why he lost…
Brilliant. Better than 300 Tory gains as far as I’m concerned.
Is anyone making betting money tonight - or have we all got it on Bozzer tomorrow?
I’d start to ignore Betfair odds on the Mayoralty for a little while. The amount of cash put down, especially for Ken, is absolutely miniscule - you could shift the odds a long way with some very small bets indeed.
81 Totally agree - am doing same.
88 - Whitehead to go, Denham to hang on at the next GE? That would be something! Could take narrowly missing out on Denham after his principled stand on Iraq - that would easily put Tories in majority territory. Still would have to think Whitehead would hang on in all but a Labour meltdown.
85 hunchman. ‘Withered on the Vine’ will be replayed to the end of time ….. truly awful.
Bed calls. I’m not staying up till morning.
So, my last estimate, Cons +311 Lab -228.
83 welcome back i love you toooooooooooooooo!
95 all about the proprotionate response - remember labour only need the 25% vote of unmarried mothers and other undesirables to win lots of seats in the GE
Based on results so far from Sky.
Labour 178
Cons 397
Lib Dems 47
Maj: 144
Anthony King also says that the Lib Dems are inflicting damage on Labour.
Sky GE projection now:
Lab 178
COn 397
Lib 47
Con maj 144
All about the sky projection con = 1983!
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
98. the ex-LD councillor John Coyne defected to the Greens two years ago and held his seat last year…
does anyone have any news about the Mendip Northeast by-election in Somerset? It determines if the LD’s get total control of council.
112 boo you beat me to it
89 - nice typo slip there!
102 was that the lib dem gain?
Is it funny or sad how overtly tory nick robinson is on the bbc
i think he wants to smile when tory wins are read out
he’s loving it
to be fair- no media are ever impartial- look at polly toynbee
I would like to index-link BBC’s share of the licence fee revenue to Tesco’s share of the UK food market (it should make for less bias against Tesco’s by the BBC-we-don’t-like-free-market-lefties, eh!).
Was just going to ask if there is a bigger fool in the WORLD than Jeremy Vine, but you were all well ahead of me.Come back Peter Snow for God’s sake- and he was bad enough.
111 LOL = 1970 hehehehehehehe
LD hold Stockport
Betfair’s main screen has their biggest banner linking to the London Mayor market. Not often political betting gets that prominence, and it’s not even a huge market. Good to see…
121 Snow rules ok
Vine shoots himself in the foot.
119. I wouldn’t look directly at Polly Toynbee if I were you.
119 “look at polly toynbee”
What, and give myself nightmares .. no thank you.
GORDON BROWN DESCRIPTION GAME
—————————–
Re arrange this phrase to describe Gordon Brown:
TNCU
Birmingham:
Aston: LD hold
Oscott: Con gain
Tyburn: LD hold (which is very good because the seat came throug a defection IIRC)
128 - even Dan Snow would do a better job than Jeremy Bindweed. Bring back Sir Robin Day - if only.
In 1997 the question was, “Were you up for Portillo?” 2008 will be remembered by whether you saw Vine’s cowboy performance live. Awesomely awful! And I quite like Vine.
Cable fronting it out well GE 2010 Con gain all seats in SW london
130- i wear sunglasses if i do
father ted comes to mind- craggy island
The other result tonight is that Labour’s activist base is further reduced as they lose councillors and councils.
Spells more bad news for Charlie Brown and the next GE.
If Lsbour blow over 200 seats I will be surprised but 200 is a watershed figure in the eyes of Labour PR types who were quoting 200 losses in an expectation management effort.
If its significant worse thats pretty poor.
Cameron should call a referendum on the BBC.
Very simple question - “Should the licence fee remain compulsory or should it become optional?”
If you want it, fine you pay for it. If you don’t want it, fine you don’t get it. Like any other product.
It is not like the NHS. There is massive other media freely available. Let the people decide.
Where are the LDs tonight:
Mark Senior
Paul Lloyd
= LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOL
anyone got any early indications from liverpool?
Wyre Forest goes blue
Regained Wyre Forest
Lab lose Hartlepool
Con gain Wyre forest f*** off KHC whatever its called
Didn’t realise that Robin Day stood for the Liberals in Hereford in the 1959 GE - Wiki learning is a lot more pleasurable compared to the barrage of toxic waste from the Beeb!
142 con gain
Labour lose Hartlepool? No, surely not!
141. I’m here
Why are BBC London passing off covering blogging as a legitimate use of the cash they’ve had to pay to host that City Hall event?
con lose worcester? who gives a * its under water for most of the year LOL
132. LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
its a wipeout…..LOlololoololloloolollollllolloolll
142 - on the council website 3 LD 3 Lab 1 Green at present
Labour WIPEOUT.
150 hello are you Paul Lloyd under an assumed name LOL
20 on Betfair for Bron to go before the end of June. Value?
147. Ludovic Kennedy, Rochdale, 1958…
Hazel Blears still smiling on Sky……..
Lab gain Yew Tree in Liverpool from LD
156 the voice of reason - have you got to cornwall now?
Labour have died tonight.
RIP.
Hazel Blears, shut up. You sound pathetic.
146 - is the Doctor going to stand next time, or retire gracefully?, after all he will be nearly 76 in May 2010.
153 you know the phrase
Gordon is the biggest # since Neville Chamberlain
157. sadly not
Beeb. LibDems hold Cambridge.
160: Hazel smiling because the Tories haven’t made any gains on Manchester City Council.
Which, as everyone knows, is the key test of whether Cameron will win the next GE.
It’s all she ever harps on about anyway…
Flintshire.
Labour lose Bagillt East to Con. Bagillt is solidly Labour and the new result is Con 67% Lab 33%.
Truly awful for Lab.
BBC - Caroline Davies: “I asked John Denham earlier if he was bracing himself for a terrible evening, and he said he was.”
How refreshingly honest!
Labour people are just scum. They are worse than the BNP. Evil, treacherous, delusional scum.
A new Tory government must take away all public advertising in the Guardian, divide up the license fee so the BBC learns its lesson, and basically make it ILLEGAL to be a socialist. So that we never again have to listen to these disgusting, Britain-hating creeps.
166 apologies
171 lets just make labour illegal cos they are (see 132)
Labour had a disastrous night in Birmingham (just the first Hodge Hill result was good for them)
146. KHH held their 10 seats. Con gain seats from others.
171. Steady on
24 councils, 54 gains - 54/24*159 = 358 gains, to ape Motty from England Germany September 2001, ‘This just gets better and better’!!
171. Have you had a rabies jab yet?
150/166 - We’ll still take you back, when you realise the error of your ways…
Tories lose there last councillor in Eastleigh. Ironic if they lost their last councillor in Sheffield tomorrow.
It’s a great night so far…..
Bad for the LibDems
Embarrassingly awful for the BBC
Totally sh/te for washed-up Liebour
Fantastic for the Tories
Tories to gain 250+ seats
Liebour to lose 200+
The Lib Dems appear to be doing quite well in some of their parliamentary seats - Eastleigh, Cambridge and Cheltenham. Not sure of Colchester.
158. Surely too soon.
BBC Key wards. 47% wards in - 1m votes.
Change on 2004
Lab -2%
Con +7%
Lib -3%
182 So far the LibDems have lost a net 3 seats - not great, but hardly bad. Our count is at 9am, so I have to go to sleep now, after 20 hours awake. Some more LD gains to come from us here in a few hours
Emily Maitlis could really do with it couldnt she……
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/in_depth/uk_politics/2008/local_elections_2008/7371050.stm
183 - agreed Jack, wouldn’t like to be the Tory PPC in Eastleigh next time as they are on a hiding to nothing there.
Boris shortening on Betfair. Ken drifting again. There would appear to be a large Con swing across the country. Will it apply to London and if not why not?
180. Ha, isn’t there a nice quotation about defecting twice being ‘irresponsible’ or somesuch?
176. No, Julian, we have to be firm. I appreciate your naturally humane feelings towards these vermin, but enough is enough. We must ABOLISH Labour.
From now on, people who want to vote Labour should be allowed to vote for a “The Queen Is Only Semi Divine” party, and forced to kowtow to a seventyfoot high anodised aluminium statute of St George.
Tories up 7% on 2004. Isn’t this fun. I need to go to sleep but just can’t!!!
LOL teather on sky - comment 187 does not apply HAHAHAHAHHA
181 “their” onviously.
185 any news from St Albans?
181. Highly likely that they will lose their last Sheffield councillor when you look at last year’s result in the ward. Lib dems beat tories by over 1000 votes. “Another northern city without tories” is what the media will probably say.
Labour expecting to go below 25% (ben brogan) - is this their worst ever locals result?
still working on the anagram at 132
190 - Quite the contrary; it takes a certain ingenuity to re-rat!
Based on results in about half the wards, I suspect that Labour may regain Oxford City Council NOC (was a Lib Dem NOC administration).
Credit to Teather. She is pwning Blears.
Patriots currently in second place
Cons +55
BNP +2
Lib Dem -3
Others -5
Labour -43
192. Yes, that would have to Tories on 45% of the vote. This is getting towards 1995/1996 meltdown levels for Labour, in terms of vote share, if not seats.
Tories only lost Worcester because they stupidly abolished weekly bin collections.
Stupid, stupid Worcester Tories. You cost us a valuable Gain!!!!!
196. 26% was the record low wasn’t it!!
More Tory councils then Labour in 96!!!!!!!
192 - same here Woody, got some lovely rich blackcurrent Calle Mayor to keep me going for the night - yum yum
Labour will rise again in two years. Gordon’s Incapacity Benefit Army is 2.7m strong and recruiting daily.
Bolton
Lab +1
COn +1
LD -3
Others +1
183 - well said Jack - and we haven’t heard anything from Solihull - the most marginal of the lot…
Goodbye Hartlepool!
200. “Patriots” currently picking at straws.
F**k you. I’m more patriotic than you ever will be! Conservatives talk the talk and walk the walk.
BNP are just nasty thugs.
202 - I’ll cheer so loudly that the whole street will hear it on GE night when that **** Micheal Foster gets his P45 - we live in hope!
Hazel Blears is shamelessly deranged. The barmy old bat is a disgrace to my home town.
209 ere ere
196 LOL
200 LOL go away BNP = *
196 It is (in percentage terms) the worst result ever obtained by an incumbent government.
200 I think the BNP have gained a seat in Rotherham.
194 Peter. FWIW the Lib Dem blogger on the Beeb said the Lib Dems were doing well in St Albans.
The Lib Dems could end the election well down in councillors but in their parliamentary seats quite well. Apparently doing well in Rochdale and Portsmouth South.
Should also point out, the vote share we’re going to see by the end of the night strongly supports YOUGOV’s big Tory leads.
200. Genius spin. You should work for Labour since you have some overlap.
209. Yeah, whatever, g’night, pyjama-chewer.
Memo to lefties: if you don’t want far right parties to do well: STOP LYING ABOUT IMMIGRATION.
Tessa - ‘No one is going to claim that this is our greatest night…’ Laughs all round in the studio… LOL!
Lab gain Belle Valle from LD in Liverpool
Conservatives lose Colchester to NOC - FiveLive.
The LD seat losses figure is steadily creeping up, -11 now.
How many gains did they reckon on?
Come on people, ignore the fascist, s/he’ll crawl back towards his / her Very British hole before long.
132 - Failed to turn back the tide of disillusionment with Labour started by Blair - CNUT
Just heard that lib dem Fred Wartenburg has gained Veralum ward in St Albans. I did some canvassing for him a couple of weeks ago - so I am delighted. Apparently lib dems one recount away from overall control.
222 mark senior what did you say? LOL
Lab HOLD Barnsley
First good Labour news of the night?
2 days of fab news headlines.
Friday dominated by Lab meltdown in locals. Weekend dominated by Bozzer taking London.
Should have counted the Mayor overnight, and combined the bad news.
Lib Dems gain St Albans - Beeb
