  1. Not one sensational gain for the Tories but two: first Southampton and now Bury!

Can you hear the sound of mobile phones being smashed against the walls of 10 Downing St?

  2. Respect won Sparkbrook ward in Birmingham

  3. Bury South MP (till 2010!) just on BBC North West - claiming the Labour vote held up and the Tories are not gaining Labour votes.

However, the Tories just took 3 seats from Labour on the council.

    Go figure!

  4. Some comfort for Labour - Lib Dems are apparently going to lose Liverpool to NOC.

  5. so we’vetaken Bury (phew) +6 in Plymouth - I can’t remember such a fun night for years.

  6. 1. Hop the carphone warehouse have plenty in stock

  7. Over 100 Tory gains now

  8. 3 - and he’s spouting the same old guff on Sky News.

An MP who knows he’s on the way out.

Tories through the +100 barrier now on the night.

  9. Tories picking up some in Wirral?

  10. What is that man on about?

  11. Haven’t had time to get my bear food from reading Mish Shedlock’s economic blog tonight - oh well, that will have to be postponed to tomorrow night.

Beeb describing Labour performance as ‘lacklustre’. Don’t recall that adjective being used about Tory performances from 1993-97!

  12. It’s still relatively early but the Tories have already made over 100 gains while Labour are heading for 100 losses.

Final tally, Tories +300 or more, Labour -250 or more?

  13. Two years to the P45!!!!!!!

  14. PAGING Mr SENIOR PAGING Mr Senior

any chance of eating a tiny slice of humble pie for ridiculing my prediction of 120+ tory gains?

    No thought not - :-)

  15. 8. The other Bury MP is the one with the slim majority. This one has a 20% majority

  16. How can anybody in Bury vote for this joker? Horrible bitter smears.

  17. ‘There will be no choice when it comes to that choice’ i agree ***k of gordon 20% swing bye bye

  18. Conservatives have lost both their (defective) councillors in Oxford.

  19. 9. yes

  20. 8 - cut the chap some slack, convincing yourself of something is more difficult than convincing others.

  21. LOL worst result lab since 73 hahahahahahaha

  22. Patriots gain another in Rotherham.

  23. 13 - Ave it, how about a joint venture to set up a niche company specialising in personalised P45’s for Labour MP’s come May 2010?!

  24. Tony King just spotted that the Tories have a councillor in Manchester City (due to the defection last year). I could hear him almost choking… ;-)

  25. James Purnell?

    HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

  26. Adam Boulton on Sky: “Its Labour’s worst performance in local government elections for more than 35 years”

The blame seems to be attaching itself firmly to Brown.

  27. I’ve said it before but it bears repeating:

Labour PR merchants were putting out 200 losses as possible but the assumption is that it was to manage expectation.

If it is significantly more than 200 then it is bad.

Radio 4 coverage is very nice indeed. Sober, straightforward.

  28. 23 LOL all about the outplacemnet service - we could make a fortune - 200 candidates waiting for it…….

  29. BBC projection

    Lab 24%
    Con 44%
    Lib who cares

    This is massive

  30. Hats off to Boulton - bang on the money about Lewis in Bury.

  31. Heh, Adam Boulton not terribly complimentary about Mr Lewis’ performance….

  32. BBC National Share:

    Con 44
    LD 25
    Lab 24

  33. Manchester
    Lab no change
    LD +1
    green -1

  34. BBC projected national share of vote:

    Conservatives: 44%
    Labour: 24%
    Lib Dems: 25%

Brown goes down to 3rd place!

  35. now just waiting for the tory 44% vote share projection to be belittled

  36. LOL projected share on BBC Lab 24% Con 44% Lib Dem 25%

  37. Projected national share

    Con 44% Lab 24% LD 25% Oths 7%

    Wow.

  38. 15 - I know Bury North is the real marginal, but I reckon Bury South will go Tory too, particularly after seeing Lewis MP on the telly just now.

And certainly on Con 44% and Lab 24% nationally…

  39. Adam Boulton describing Ivan Lewis’ nonsense as discraceful. Anyone watching the BBC switch over to Sky News. It’s brilliant!

  40. Beeb Key Wards - Projected National Share of Vote

    Lab 24% .. Con 44% .. Lib Dems 25% .. Others 7%

  41. ‘Lib who cares’ LOL

    Purnell f*** off

  42. I wonder why Nick Palmer went to bed?

    loLLLL!

  43. Just like 1968 - very poor for Labour

  44. 34. Who will be the first to say ‘Well the Tories aren’t at 50%’?

  45. BBC Projected national share:

    Tories 44%
    Labour 24%

  46. 37 con absolute certs to win both bury seats next GE

  47. hunchman…have inside info on Colchester if you’re interested…what do you want to know?!

  48. 43 - I’ll go 1/6 on Simon Heffer… ;)

  49. 41 lol

Con less than 1931 % - total crunchdown!

  50. 29. Woody, your statistics betray you. Why would people care about the parties in 1st place and 3rd place, but not that in 2nd place?

2nd place is, inherently, more significant than 3rd place.

  51. Details on St Albans:

    Lib Dem 30 (+1)
    Conservatives 22 (+3)
    Labour 5 (-3)
    Others 1 (-1)

This is total wipeout for Labour - none of their remaining five seats were being contested.

  52. 29. So compared to 2004 national projections
    Con +7
    Lab -2
    LD -2

  53. Labour “need to listen” blah, blah

  54. Dimbleby actually filleting Tony Lloyd!

  55. Ave it 08. Conservative HQ will care. They’ll be number crunching the Con/Lib Dem marginals and so far the yellow peril are doing ok.

  56. 46 - any big local issue that the Tories mismanaged there? And do you think it has a dynamic like Torbay - ie better not to be in charge? Thanks in advance.

  57. My (Council) PC won’t allow me to see Betfair. Can anyone tell me the current Betfair prices on London Mayor pls?

  58. 49. I just wanted to be the first to break the good news Julian!!

  59. 45 - and I’m moving to Bury South shortly, so it will be nice to be in a seat where my vote will actually count for once.

I’ll be doing my bit to get rid of Idiot Lewis MP… ;-)

  60. 28 loads of jobs picking carrots in Lincolnshire now all the Poles have realised what a t**t Gordon is and have gone back home

  61. 1.24 and 5 to back 1.25 and 5.9 to lay. Slight Brois drift in the last hour

  62. Patriots HOLD both seats in Sandwell.

  63. 53 but LDs will disappear in the GE……… Half their seats will go Con minimum

  64. 60 GO AWAY

  65. 57 - Bob do you purposefully move to what you think will be a knife edge marginal at the next GE?!

  66. Oh how I love to see these lying, thieving, warmongering Labour scum getting a blo0dy good kicking!

    99 lost seats so far.

  67. 56. Ha, fair play.

  68. Progress for the LDs at last, slowly moving towards breaking even now.

Was ‘no change’ about the limit of their expectations again?

  69. ummm Cleggs LD’s performed worse than Campbells LD’s?

I hope those who went on about Campbells age as a lame excuse to get rid of the man maybe get the point that the political ground is changing and thats why Campbell couldnt hold up the LDs to anything like 2005.

Cleeg wont either. It’s tidal flow.

  70. Thanks 59 woody662

  71. Portsmouth NOC - No change - Beeb.

  72. Hoon says Brown is the best chancellor ever!!!!!!

And says Cameron won’t be happy with results!!!!

first swearword on hear but what a tawt

  73. Hoon pretending he can’t hear Dimbleby’s question!

  74. This is brilliant. If I was Labour MP, and particularly if I was on my way out, I would plain refuse to go on air. Sod it.

    Oh dear, look at Hoon!

  75. 70 i hate swearing on here (LOL)

  76. Hoon the Goon just did the “Ive lost sound” routine when asked about the 44% vs 24% numbers

  77. 71 - That was hilarious

  78. 63 - no, I decided where I wanted to live first, the constituency it is in was a secondary consideration…

  79. ok gn all - back tomorrow night…….

  80. Oh dear, I’ve got a horrible feeling Mr Hoon was pretending his earpiece was faulty when Dimbles kebabbed him.

  81. 74. Desperate stuff, and that man supports the same fooball team as me. Sickening

  82. 61 Ave it 08. Not on these results.

  83. 70 - what’s the world coming to if even Woody is now engaging in expletives!

  84. Hahahaha Geoff Hoon’s deaf! That was brilliant - ‘Do you really think that David Cameron is going to be a sad man this evening? Do you really?’ Hm hm I can’t hear you!

  85. 70 Labour seem to have taken Josef Goebbals advice: the bigger the lie, the more people are likely to believe it.

  86. Hoontastic.

    OMG.

    License-fee value or what!

  87. That’s 100 gains for the Tories so far, with fewer than half the councils declared

  88. Gordon’s only hope now must be for Ken to win tomorrow.

  89. Lib Dems doing OK tonight. Clegg will breathe easier.

    Labour getting smacked botties

  90. Oh dear, Labour peddling the desperate line about Tories not progessing in the north. tut tut

  91. Labour MP - Cons aren’t winning in Scotland!! There aren’t any elections in Scotland! Absolute classic!!

  92. 75 - good job. I’d be seriously worried for your health otherwise!

  93. Interesting Tory performnce in Birmingham.

  94. 54 Not too much of Colchester wide issues, although some increasing annoyance at the new art gallery possibly as bus services continue to be distrupted due to half the bus station closing. Lib Dems have been better at getting themselves seen as a good alternative since they left the coalition of c.2004 and have been good at attracting vibrant new candidates and activists by all accounts…this has tied the others down in more areas.

  95. 88 - it’s like Tories 15 years ago celebrating holding on (narrowly) to Runneymede and Weybridge plus Kensington & Chelsea, only worse!

  96. LOL “Labour has slipped to third place in the projected national share of the vote, according to BBC calculations..”

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk_politics/7378788.stm

  97. Cheltenhan NOC No change - Beeb

  98. 79 yes they will (LDs get cleared out)

    GN

  99. Perhaps this is a rogue poll?

  100. Hoon says no crisis and cites difficult decisions. He’s living in lah lah land

  101. Q: If you apply the 2004 to 2008 overall Locals swing to the 2004 Mayoral result what do you get?

  102. St Helens
    Lab +2
    LD -2

  103. Could this be too good a night/weekend for the Tories if it causes them to lose their greatest electoral asset - Mr Gordon Brown?

I can see him throwing in the towel as the news gets worse and worse.

I do hope not, of course…

  104. 91 - Thanks. So what would you predict on current trends for Colchester at the next GE - Bob Russell to hang on by around 3-4,000?

  105. 101. Boris :-)

  106. Milliband keeps talking about ideology. odd

  107. Just come back from the Oxford count. Very odd. The Tories lost both their defector councillors, yet their vote rose sharply. This took votes from the LibDems, who won two, lost won but many wins with very slim majorities. Labour performed well against the IWCA, taking two wards. The greens lost one, won one. Labour have gone from 19 councillors to 23 (there are 48 in total). Andrew Smith looked very happy indeed. Appears very much not inline with the national trend.

  108. 24 Anyone else think Anthony King has the appearance of a taior’s dummy, especially when seated next to a rather animated Phil Silvers?
It demonstrates the dearth of talent on the BBC, that they have to rely on a 73 year old.

  109. Vince Cable losing LD support by calling Bury and Oldham “suburbs of Manchester”.

    Silly old fool…

  110. Thought the Tories were in danger of slipping under 100 gains there, back from 103 to 101 - it’s temporarily like a cricket batsman needlessly getting themselves out once they get to the ton!

  111. Patriots gain another in Amber Valley.

  112. 108 taior’s = tailor’s

  113. Derby- Lib Dems +5 ( 4 from Labour, 1 from Conservative) to become the largest party. Council controlled by unholy Labour/Conservative alliance ( Labour leader, Conservative mayor)and I suspect the Lib Dems becoming the largest party won’t change that….

  114. I like the look of Paddick odds on BF - 980.

  115. 107 - James, am going to look at those wards in detail tomorrow once the dust has settled. Where did the Tory vote go up most - in the wards mainly making up OXWAB or less helpfully in Ox East?

  116. 108. I find their radio counterparts on R4 very sound.

    Bit of gravitas ya know.

  117. Pendle
    LD -8
    Con +2
    Lab +4
    Others +2

  118. Con gains 1 seat in Barnsley

  119. 117 - thought Pendle would be a bit better than that, Prentice won’t go without a hell of a fight

  120. All three TV spokespersons for the three major parties are now Jewish: Ed Miliband, Caroline Spelman, and Vince Cable.

My Jewdar is giving me signals. Nothing wrong with any of them: I’m a huge fan of Cable, and Spelman and Miliband are two of the nicer and smarter MPs in their parties.

    But, hm.

  121. Bob likely to hang on with similar majority (and possibly 50%+ of the vote - a personal target) due to strong and united Lib Dem team and weak Tory opposition in the candidate from London…maybe people today voted with the belief that the Tories are giving up on Colchester…massive majorities in some formally safe Tory wards apparently!

  122. 120, The master race SeanT, I’m telling ya…

  123. 115 - big swing in North ward (Oxwab). Did ok in Carfax and Hollywell (now OXeast). Didn’t get much traction in Summertown (Oxwab).

  124. 120 seanT. Who gives a bagel ??

  125. As a resident of Bournemouth east, who knows the city of Southampton quite intimately,I hope the newly-elected Conseravtive council governs for ALL,and remembers its unpopular minority gropu attacks on social/education needs gave a last throw of the dice toa Lab-Lib coalition.
I am scoring no cheap points-Lbaour have been f***ed nationally, and even as a Labourite (albeit one who wavers),I would rather get to the next election ASAP,hopefully not lose too badly, then re-build

  126. Oldham NOC No Change - Beeb.

  127. 120
2m UK muslims and little voice - not good.

  128. Butetown gained by LDs from Lab in Cardiff.

  129. Right I’m off to bed (well sleep as I’m on the laptop in bed). Enjoy.

P.S where are our Labour friends. On the drink I presume.

  130. Ed Miliband? Is this wet the future of Labour?
Will Labour exist in a decade?

  131. 123 - Thanks. Don’t think Evan will be losing too much sleep over it by the sounds of things, which is a great shame. Will analyse tomorrow once I’m sobered up again!

  132. Is there a live feed link somebody could post?

  133. 120 - not sure that Vince Cable is Jewish. I seem to recall you making a similar comment about a question time panel once, saying Michael Gove was Jewish.

  134. Hello, all! Any clue what turnout was in London?

  135. 120,For the blokes,the evidence is circumstantial :D

  136. LDs have now lost Liverpool (BBC)

  137. LibDems lose Liverpool

  138. Spelman and Cable are certainly not Jewish..

  139. Liverpool

    LD -3
    Lab +3
    Liberal -1
    Greens +1

  140. 117, 119 - no chance, Prentice is a goner. The Tories came within a whisker of taking it at the 2005 GE, and will surely win in 2010. But it’s the LDs who are the big losers there tonight, 28 councillors down to 20 and loss of control probably to a Tory/Labour coalition.

  141. 124.

In fact, I’ve just Googled Nick Robinson and apparently he’s Jewish. I’m guessing - call me Heinrich Himmler - that Anthony King is Jewish. So that means 5 out of 6 people now on TV delivering UK politics to the UK… are Jewish.

  142. Lib Dems Lose Liverpool and Pendle to NOC.

  143. OT - Hillary lost her voice today

  144. LibDems lose Pendle

  145. 132. |I assume go to bbc.co.uk/news and their live news.

  146. I understand that lib dems have kept control of Liverpool (although BBC say we have lost it). A

  147. 131 - I think Evan should be pretty safe. The tory rise was more interesting in that it took votes off the LibDems to the benefit of labour. Especially in wards like Marston and HHN

  148. Not just Labour having a bad night. The LibDems lose both Liverpool and Pendle.

  149. Time for another Gin and Dubonnet if I am to stay up and watch this much longer….

  150. 129 I’m one Labourite who has liberated a bottle of 5.4% real ale from his fridge,to dull the pain of Southampton

  151. Sky gives a different changes for Liverpool than BBC…I guess if they look at 2004 results or at the composition before the election (after defections and co)

  152. 141 - are you Jewish too, Sean?

  153. 138, There ya go SeanT, Rod should know.

    He has a list……

  154. 147 - more so given results in Vale of White Horse last year on my patch in Abingdon - current central view of mine is Evan hanging on by 4k unfortunately.

  155. 149 - don’t watch Jeremy Vine on TV he will put you to sleep

  156. Who on earth do the BBC think watches election results at 2 in the morning? The f**king teletubbies?!

  157. Sky projected majority up to 164.

  158. Is poor old Ed Miliband borderline Aspergers? He’s floundering badly on the BBC and seems right out of his depth. No wonder he keeps a low profile generally.

  159. 153. I don’t need a list. They have a list which is freely available…

  160. 156, Just La La & Po, the other two have no interest in politics apparently

  161. Nick Robinson ain’t Jewish. Michael Gove certainly ain’t Jewish - he’s Church of Scotland.

Next people will be bringing out the old canard that Rupert Murdoch is Jewish.

  162. 155 - “don’t watch Jeremy Vine on TV he will put you to sleep” - yes, in the vetenarian sense of the word.

  163. 24% really is dreadfull.

  164. 72. woody662. I think it’s spelt “tort”, (or possibly taut-, as it is an inexactitude).

  165. Percentages so far:

    Tories 44%
    Lib Dems 25%
    Labour 24%

    LOL

  166. Early results in Wales suggest the tide is “turning strongly” against Labour, says First Minister Rhodri Morgan.

    Good old Rhodri!

  167. 159. Sorry, you are right, they do have a list.

You have a database….I should get with the 21st century….

  168. 161 I thought Gove was RC?

  169. Funny business in Liverpool. Still Lib Dem control though.

  170. Lib Dems in Liverpool sign up an independent to regain control by non electoral means… Democrats?

  171. 25% for the LibDems is fairly solid.

  172. 170 - she was an independent and not up for election this time.

  173. 170. Sounds shrewd to me.

  174. 168 - Not sure what Gove is, but he’s not Jewish. I was just pointing out that Sean is not always right.

Next he’ll be complaining that all the imams at the Finsbury Park mosque are Jewish too.

  175. We’re trying to think of some good news for Labour so we don’t look like we are too pro-Tory. Honest!

  176. Hello Don - PB’s celebrity of the week and this your very first post of the day, or should I say yesterday.

  177. BBC: “There is no crisis,” says Labour’s chief whip Geoff Hoon.

Haven’t we heard something similiar before?

  178. 172. She was Labour before being Independet.

  179. Con good performance in Winchester is worrying for Martin Todd.

  180. 143. Nah she just lent it out to Jeremiah Wright….

  181. West Lancashire, another crucial northern marginal (which Labour gained in 1992, not 1997) - Tories still in control, and 2 more seats won from Labour.

  182. 168 - Nope, his father is a Presbyterian fishmonger in Aberdeen.

  183. 161. Clearly I’m not an anti-Semite. I just like teasing you all.

FWIW Caroline Spelman apparently is NOT Jewish, she is married to a Jewish guy. but Nick Robinson IS:

“BBC political editor Nick Robinson has revealed that his mother’s family were Jewish refugees from Nazi Germany. “Though my father was CoE, my mother was the child of German-Jewish refugees. I didn’t know this until I was secondary-school age,” he told The Jewish Chronicle.”

Cable I’m guessing by the nose (sorry). Miliband is. I think Dimbleby is wee free Presbyterian.

We need more 7th Day Adventists on TV!!!

  184. 179 - they can’t forget Mr Oaten’s indiscetions that easily!

  185. Both Heanor seats have been won by the BNP.

  186. Flintshire.

Labour in meltdown - losing to paper candidates in formerly solid wards.

    http://www.flintshire.gov.uk/WebCont/Election2008.nsf/(Web%20Election%20State%20of%20the%20Parties%20-%20English)

Previous council had 35 Labour councillors… One less rotten borough run by the Trots.

  187. 143. SSI. She she should have a look around New Hampshire. I’m sure she found it there last time.

  188. 185 - how are they doing across the country?

  189. 184 - Oaten’s got nothing to do with the council.

  190. Pulling safely and steadily away from the ton I see now! Double hundred plus, here we come.

  191. Well done Spelman - ‘You’re not listening Ed!’

  192. Labour with 30 elected in Swansea with 2 wards still to declare.
In 2004 Lab had 32 councillors overall

  193. Why is all this conversation about the ethnic or confessionary background of the Beeb’s commentators?

  194. Boris now 1.25 - his longest since early evening.

  195. 193 - Sean started it. He’s Cornish.

  196. Portillo is rubbishing the Conservatives what a surprise!

  197. With friends like Portillo who needs enemies? What a bitter and twisted has-been he is.

  198. Anglesey
    Plaid +2
    Lab +5
    COn +1
    LD +1
    Others -9

  199. 182 Don - that sounds as improbable as your legendary “Post 26″ earlier this week but is doubtless equally true!

BTW Who won the London Mayor election?

  200. Alright im done for tonight.

The key figure in my mind is will Labour losses go over 200 when they hoped to restrict them to 160 or so.

  201. 188 They’ve won 10 seats so far (up 7). Presumably they’ll pick up some more when Epping Forest, Stoke, and the West Yorkshire councils count tomorrow. I’ve read their candidates have won 14% on average, but very patchy.

  202. 194 - what’s moving that do you think?

  203. How long before Portillo comes out as a non-Tory?

  204. 183. Surely that means that Robinson is 50% Jewish?

Or in fact is he not free to choose what he is?

  205. 196 In their differing ways, he and Heffer are equally repellent.

  206. 198 - Andrea, who are the others?

  207. 201- thanks Sean

  208. The BBC update feed has mysteriously stopped at 0156! Looks as though the guy has got fed up reporting on the Labour bearfest! You wouldn’t want to go on strike now would you?!

  209. Portillo slagging of Boris.

  210. Polly conceding London!!

  211. How can Portillo possibly rubbish the Conservatives when they have a 20% lead in a national election? Even Anthony King is being forced to say how well the Conservatives are doing and that Labour are doing catastrophically bad?

  212. 206.. Indipendents….various sorts of them there

  213. 212 - thanks Andrea

  214. 203 Or just comes out ;-)

  215. Polly - “The ES hasn’t behaved like a newspaper at all” “Disgraceful allegations”.

    LOLOL

  216. 214 - oy! Get your filthy hands off my innuendo!

    G’night!

  217. So, will there be a reshuffle or with Gordon bury his head in the sand?

  218. 208 - aaaaagghhh, just as I said that, they’ve updated with

0222 Trust Michael Portillo. Just as the Tory leadership was putting the champagne on ice, he says their performance tonight is not quite good enough to win a general election. It is, however, a terrible night for Labour, he adds.

Obviously need stronger sedatives to get through the night!

  219. Patriots holding firm in second place.

    Tory +117
    BNP +7
    Lib Dem +2
    UKIP +2
    PC +2
    Respect +1
    Green -1
    RA -6
    Others -20
    Labour -102

  220. Ooh Wales about to come through. Watch for that Labour minus figure to grow rapidly!

  221. Oh God - Jeremy’s back!

  222. 211. Check what portaloo said: I’m a broadcaster not a Tory” - he’s thinking, understadably, of his career to come, not his past politicking.

  223. 199 - Peter, I can exclusively reveal that Boris is the new Mayor.

(based on my observations today in a typical London ward - Garden Suburb in Barnet which is so Jewish that the polling station is in a synagogue!)

  224. BNP gains so far,

    Rotherham x2
    Amber Valley x2
    Nuneaton x2

Also hold 2 seats in Sandwell. Considering most of the Target seats are declared tomorrow you after fear it will be a good local election for them.

On the other hand a 70% turn out in the capital should keep them out of the running for an assembly seat.

  225. Goodnight all, 2.30 is my self imposed limit!

  226. What is this ridiculous snow feature in the Beeb coverage?

  227. 217. I think he’s going to bury his head. The impression you get from Labour ministers tonight is that this is no big deal and nothing much is happening. The only reason thats the case is because of the seats being contested of course. On another year, with this share of the vote, Labour could lose over a thousand councillors I would have thought? Infact, next year, that may be what happens?

  228. can anyone in bbc news really compare what they are spewing out and compare it favourably to that which cnn broadcast in primary election coverage??? jeremy vine needs to be replaced, and king, dimbleby and the pretty blonde who knows little about politics need to go too.

  229. Eyes closing… thanks to Mike & team for keeping this most excellent site going in extreme circs. Congrats. Night all.

  230. 222. OK, so as a broadcaster, how can he be critical of the Tories?

  231. 217 By having a reshuffle, Tractors is doing just that - burying his head in the sand!
