  1. Apart from Party fanatics and the Candidates’ families, does anyone ever bother to watch these things? I know I don’t.

  2. I have just watched the Lib Dem one. She says, “I am not in it for the prestige, and I do nt believe it is my inheritance”.

Two dog whistles in one sentence? Impressive.

  3. The Lib Dem one looks like it was filmed on a camera phone.

  4. Beyond anything else, the Labour and Lib Dem vidoes look like they were done by a not particularly capable amateur, who is trying out a camera for the first time, whereas the Conservative video is professional and easy to watch without cringing.

Their candidate seems much more capable, Cameron has clearly benefitted from familiarity with the medium (WebCameron), and I feel I know the candidate at the end of it.

I don’t know who is running the Labour and Lib Dem campaigns, but I would challenge them to justify their salaries if they are allowing this sort of quality deficit to exist in campaigning materials.

  5. Labour one is inept. It feature Miliband at the start with about 10% of Tamsin’s face in evidence. Mind you Labour has no money to do it properly

  6. re 1. I think they are quite useful to get an idea of the candidates and also a sense of the approach of their campaigns. clearly the Tories and Labour have put a lot more into their videos than the Lib Dems.

One of the reasons you produce these is to inspire activists about the person they are working for.

  7. Far too data hungry for my Vodafone widget broadband I’m afraid.

  8. (I am temprarily in exile in an internet cafe because my stupid home phone line has stopped working (for the third time in 3 years) and may not be mended until Tuesday).

Based on what happened in by-elections in 1993 to 1997, my theory about by-elections is that the voters would prefer to use tactical voting to punish a government party more by pushing it into third place than by defeating it with a big majority. As soon as they are confident that Labour has fallen below the 32% level (down from 48%) they will know that it is safe to split the vote between Con and Lib Dem, because doing so would make Labour third rather than narrowly winning by “coming through the middle”.

My prediction keeps changing but at the moment I’m thinking

    Con 15,000
    LD 10,000
    Lab 9,000
    ish.

  9. Whatever his other qualities or deficiencies, Edward Timpson most certainly does not sound like a Tory toff or a ‘Henry’. The only explanation for Labour’s tactics must surely be that their campaign team must all be double agents from CCHQ. Perhaps Gordon Brown himself is Mole One.

  10. 3. It was, if you keep watching the footage continues into a gypsy bare knuckle fight near the Crewe railway tracks….

Henry G if you are around, if Brown is to go, what are the mechanisms assuming he tries to stay put?

  11. The Lib Dem video is dire and the Labour one not much better. The Conservative clip is professional and Timpson comes across as a down to earth, normal guy, which makes the “toff” jibes even less credible.

  12. Whoever is running the labour campaign down there needs the sack, the tories seem to be doing a ‘give Brown a kicking’ campaign, the lib dems are….well, I don’t know. Labour is going all out for a bash the toff campaign coupled with some nasty leaflets, both of which seems to have had no effect. I bet Mr Pickles is sunning himself safe in the knowledge this is his to help win tactically, while his opponant is an imbecile.

  13. 6.

Because of course YouTube was so effective in help Ron Paul win the Republican nomination. Seriously, I don’t think these things matter, except if they are picked up by the media or if they show the candidate making racist comments. Even compared to coverage on local radio/TV & freesheet You Tube is irrelevant.

  14. The Labour clip is woeful. Nothng about the candidate, only what she wants to do about the centre of Crewe. I was hoping for footage of the Brownstuff , as per the Tory clip with Cameron, but no such luck! Only the anodyne Miliband and soem wafting balloon (the latter being more interesting).

    Sign for the future?

  15. 5. Labour’s 1st choice manager didnm’t want to run C & N. Is it Watson running their show.

  16. 13. The Obama Girl video seemed quite effective. Maybe Tamsin should release a Gordon Girl song. ;)

  17. 2. What is a “dog whistle”? I have heard the term recently but the definition must have got lost in the ether before it got to me.

  18. To reply to Sally C in the last thread: it is as I understand it Conservative policy to support the Government on issuing ID cards to foreign nationals resident in Britain, so that their visa status can be checked if needed. You feel this is racist? It’s a matter of nationality, not ethnic group: if you are a British national, you don’t need a visa so it doesn’t arise. A more reasonable criticism might be that the leaflet implies that the Tories might disagree when they actually don’t.

  19. Becoming a Marxist has made it more enjoyable for me that the main parties lose seats to each other, rather than holding them, even if the overall numbers remain about the same.

  20. 18. Anything to say about the rest of the leaflet Nick?

  21. 10. I honestly don’t know quite how it’d work. I think I’m right in saying to get shot of him will require a challenger supported by 71 MPs and followed by a majority vote of Labour Party conference. Alternatively the Cabinet could turn on him one-by-one. In reality I think it’d more likely that certain elder statesmen - Prescott, Kinnock, Cunningham, Healey (?!?) would advise him the game is up.

  22. 17: A dog whistle is an apparently obscure reference to an agenda of part of the electorate that implies you are on the side of the interested listener without saying so (the analogy is that humans can’t hear dog whistles but dogs can). The LibDem clip refers obscurely to prestige and inheritance, and is clearly intended to have a go at both the Tory candidate because he’s posh and the Labour candidate because she’s Gwynneth’s daughter, without actually saying either.

But she likes cats so you won’t heaer me utter a word against her.

  23. I think the thing that comes across loud and clear is that the Conservative video is almost a Party By-election Broadcast. The other two are just face pieces to camera. The Labour one was pretty reasonable but amateur and noticeable that only the Crewe half was mentioned the Lib Dem one was amateur and dire, the candidate was clearly reading from a script that she wasn’t even entirely convinced by.

  24. re 13. Well the White House race has really shown how YouTube can play a decisive factor. We saw it with the famous Hillary arrive at Tulza video and the Wright sermons. We will also see McCain whenever he has a senior moment.

  25. 22
It would be interesting to see whats on the Westminster Hour tonight on R4. Healey would be a really good person to get an opinion from. After all he fought Militant and for the deputy leadership. He was a political heavyweight in the real sense of the word as oppsed to the current Labour Cabinet, that couldn’t run a whelk stall.

  26. 18. Nick, why would a foreign national, once they are in this country, need their visa checked thereafter?

  27. 26 Far cheaper I’d of thought to ask to see their passports……

  28. 24. There was ethnic conflict in Tulsa? Bloody hell, America is in worse condition than I thought…..

  29. 26: Because queries can arise over their right to take employment and their right to stay. It’s quite a common problem for people to come in on a visitor’s visa for a specified period, and then seek work and/or simply overstay. When you read of illegal immigration, it’s not normally about someone smuggled in the back of a lorry, but about someone who has come in on a short-term basis and then melted into the background. One can debate whether the rules are right, but it’s difficult to argue that they shouldn’t be enforced.

  30. re 24. Yea - thanks. I typing in the garden and the bright sun makes it pretty hard to see the screen properly.

  31. 29. The onus is already on employers to check people’s visa status. If people are working in the black economy then this won’t change a thing.

  32. what exactly is timpson going to do about world food price rises? the conservatives have picked another white upper middle class for their party - what a surprise. the conservative video was very filmed and put together- thats the Cameron conservative party for you, all style but no real substance.

  33. 29
    New Labour policy on illegals.

    http://www.newmarketjournal.co.uk/news/Illegal-immigrants-told-to-make.3873970.jp

A spokesman for the police told Mr Paice: “Immigration were consulted at St Ives and, due to their staffing levels and our own, and also taking into account the availability of custody facilities, no other option was available other than to direct these persons to the immigration facility at Croydon, which is an accepted practice.”

  34. 13: Matthew, that had more about Ron Paul being Ron Paul than anything else. What was noticeable is how a minor candidate like Paul got a lot more publicity than he would have even five years ago.

18: Nick, Labour ID card policies have little to do with public safety and a lot to do with trying to portray the Tories as week on security. Like with ‘British jobs for British workers’ your party uses the language of the BNP to do it.

Taking money off the poorest to give the middle classes a tax cut just before an intended election, and using the language of the BNP without shame, is that the party what Labour should be?

  35. 21. Thats a big list for a formal challenge if Gordon is reluctant to go. It does make it harder for someome to break cover.

I keep comng back to the parliamentary rebellion idea as if the grey suits of high standing go to Gordon today I’d suspect they’d get a firm no. On the other hand if Gordon cant get bills through parliament and thus is a leader of a canoe without a paddle then he can be as reluctant as he likes he’d have to go and even he would know it.

Whether that rebellion was deliberately manufactured to oust him or just jumped on as a handy conincidence to use is anyones guess.

In the short term I’d tilt to him hanging on but I think three issues may be pivotal; This 10p tax business, the 42 days, C&N by election.

The first 2 he can muddle something to keep the wolves at bay unless as I mentioned, its used a tool to try to weaken him fatally and therefore no compromise short of total climbdown would work.

The 3rd, I have now decided to avoid the market as I’m not big on short odds on chances but I take our esteemed hosts calculations as being a definitive statement on where things stand right now.

  36. If that really is a fair selection of campaign videos then god help us all. The Lib Dem one looks like a hostage video with her reading a prepared script. Pity she didn’t hold up a recent news paper to show she was till alive.

The labour one screams defeat. The refference to it being time for labour to come together is desperate pleading and if your lead punch is a reference to a tory council when you’ve run the country for 11 years well the…

The tory one was very good. He’s a looker which helps, he came across as normal and the messages would resonate I imagine. The only problem is that he’s another posh boy but it is cheshire. very good really.

Because of my diary I’m going to do polling day in C and N and thats it so have no on the ground knowledge but my kreminology tells me from the party communication that they don’t think this is one they can win and aren’t pulling out all the stops.

I wouldn’t underestimate the effect of the leaflet blizzard will have on harden the core vote and picking up floaters but two things i think nhave sunk them

    1. that ICM poll with its clear squeeze mesage will be on every Lab/COn leaflet

    2. the early row over a PPC selection has spooked the party.

    ho hum

  37. New Rasmussen Presidential Poll for Michigan :

    McCain 44% .. Clinton 44%
    McCain 45% .. Obama 44%

    http://www.rasmussenreports.com/public_content/politics/election_20082/2008_presidential_election/michigan/election_2008_michigan_presidential_election2

  38. Peculiar comment from David Cameron on the Tory video - seemed to be arguing that the candidate being a lawyer would be particualr plus in Westminster.

How many MPs are lawyers ? I hope we aren’t going dow the American path where over half the Senate are lawyers, and the Democratic primary was dominated by my learned friends.
Surely its healthier to have more scientists etc in Parliament? (Try that on the streets of Broxtowe, Nick !)

  39. 36 - That is pretty bad for McCain given the Democrats haven’t done any campaigning there yet.

  40. 30. It would have made for a better story if Hilary had talked of driving her battle bus through Tulsa dodging gunfire though, Bill with John Deere cap and shotgun shooting out one of the roof windows, Chelsea passing the ammunition….

That vision has made my day.

  41. More importantly though.

    Hull Gain Watford!!

    LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOL

  42. Foreigners having to show their biometric visas today; British citizens having to show their compulsory ID cards tomorrow.

Welcome to the Britain of Labour’s 4th term.

  43. Hillary ticks up a few points on the Iowa Echanges :

    http://iemweb.biz.uiowa.edu/quotes/Nomination08_quotes.html

  44. From the earlier thread:

Nick@189 “I don’t know enough about the Tory candidate in the by-election so can’t fairly comment on him.”

This is disingenuous - and, I suspect deliberately so. It’s well known that the C&N candidate is a Timpson and heir to the Timpson ‘fortune’.

So far so good, if you want to brand him a toff. But it’s hard to do so when his parents gave much effort to fostering (more than 80) disadvantaged children.

Such, selfless service, of course, doesn’t fit with the ‘toff’ label. So he says “I don’t know enough about him”.

Shame, miserable and mean-spirited since any fair-minded person would know that ‘toff’ as a label simply doesn’t fit - except in the prejudiced, bile-laden world of the C&N Labour Party and, of course, Nick’s tribal ‘loyalty’ prevents him from saying so clearly.

  45. Pretty good summary of why McCain has a mountain to climb in November.

    http://www.iht.com/articles/2008/05/11/america/letter.php?page=1

  46. 35- “The Lib Dem one looks like a hostage video with her reading a prepared script. Pity she didn’t hold up a recent news paper to show she was till alive.”

    ROFLMAO!

[start:Tory astroturf mode]Also have to agree that the conservative video is best of the bunch simply because its production values enable it to get a more sophisticated argument across - the jaunty uplifting music suggests hope and makes it less of a rant against a failing government. The others just look like the modern equivalents of xeroxed A$ posters in contrast.[end:Tory astroturf mode].

Genuinely interested to see what Roger’s take on them is given his experience in this field and position at the other end of the spectrum.

  47. 40 Kieran. :-) …. So that’s Hull (Lib Dem Council) gains Watford …. Lib Dem Council, Mayor and next MP !!

Ave It must have been very naughty to be punished thus !! but of course Ave It is a Tory Electoral Sado-Masochist … he loves the Yellow Peril having the whip hand in Watford !!

  48. Obama’s travelled to 57 states:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EpGH02DtIws

  49. 43 The vast majority of the population of this country are not clued into the Whos Who of the Toffs world and dont know who Timpson is or what the fortune is he is heir to .

  50. Says Ave It …. “hit me with those bar charts ……….. harder HARDER …. Oh God I’m winning hereeeeeeeeee !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!”

  51. I didn’t realise that being the son of a key-cutting and shoe repair merchant qualifies one as a ‘toff’ nowadays. I mean, it’s hardly Debretts stuff is it?

  52. 40 Kieran TEE HEE you make such a valuable contribution on here!
    46 Jack triple HOHOHO

All about going up to the LD area and creaming them 3-0 next Wednesday!

  53. 50 Couldnt agree more- ridiculous. It appears that anyone born to parents who made a success of their own lives is now condemned as Tim nice but Dim.

  54. off topic, but more important to some of us parochial types;
if John O is still there, have you retained your Housing Cabinet portfolio in Elmbridge?
Assuming one of the existing Cabinet becomes deputy Mayor, (perhaps the Leisure portfolio holder on grounds of seniority?) you may have a new face or two ?

  55. Steve Chapman on RCP looks at problems facing McCain :

    http://www.realclearpolitics.com/articles/2008/05/is_mccain_sailing_into_a_storm.html

  56. 51 - ‘All about going up to the LD area and creaming them 3-0 next Wednesday!’

    L to the O to the L!!

  57. The Lib Dem video is just so amatuer it beggars belief, better not to bother with one if that’s the best they can do.

Can someone give Dunwoody the name of a decent dentist.

  58. Labour video - all about keeping the candidate hidden for most of the video!!!!!!!!

LD video - Elizabeth Shenton? I don’t think so.

Con video - brilliant - emotional - almost as emotional as X Factor!

    Con gain C&N 15,000 maj!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  59. Kieran = (Mark Senior+Gabble)/2.

  60. Interesting take on the referendum situation. Summed up:

‘It’s hard to avoid the conclusion that Alexander is prepared to gamble the future of the Union to save her career. That’s a terrible indictment. One hopes politicians would, instead, risk their careers for the greater good.’

    http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/2008/may/11/scotland.scotland

O/T Wawrinka has broken and is 4-3 up. Shucks.

  61. 50 Considering the vagaries of retail in the UK since WWII I doubt very much there is a Timpson fortune or that the putative MP is in anyway an heir to it or any longer has any connection with his forebears company. His parents or grandparents in all probability sold any interest they had in the business decades ago - IIRC it was bought out in the 60’s then later then spun off from Hanson’s through a management buy out led by another family member.

But its an election, what have facts to do with anything.

  62. 58 - Ave It want to bet on Watford winning 3-0 on wednesday?

    He He!!

  63. If it’s Watson running the campaign I’m not surprised at the toff stuff.

  64. 61 I dont want to take money off you HO HO

  65. 60 shows I should google before posting - it was his Dad that bought back the family firm (embarrassed of Wiltshire posts)

so presumably he is an heir to some of it and therefore my previous post is rubbish!

  66. (53 - Ambled in from the sun, which hasn’t stopped shining on Elmbridge since May 1st ;)

Thanks, and “yes” to your first question, but have to pass on the second for the moment if you don’t mind.)

  67. 62. Watson has a record of this then? To be honest, this campaign seems to be more based on personal prejudice that campaigning tactics. It’s the same reason Brown can’t deal with Cameron, he always dimisses Cameron rather than try to take him head on. Even if he did take him on he’d come off second best anyway, but I digress. Someone needs to take the labour party there by the scruff of the neck and set them on the right course, fotunately they won’t. :)

  68. 65. The sun always shines on the Elmbridge Jacobite Empire. ;-)

  69. Apart from Mummy, Daddy and Grandad all being Labour MPs, what other qualities do you bring to the voters of Crewe and Nantwich Ms Dunwoody?

You stood as an AM last year, but lost at Preseli in Pembrokshire, is this true.

  70. 67 - And truly will never set.

  71. The Labour campaign is (once again) an absolute disgrace. Is anyone uploading their leaflets (the last one had a top hat photoshopped onto Timpson)?

For any Labourites out there, we are going to give you one hell of a beating and we will enjoy it.

  72. 68 dr syn. We’ll ask Boris’s dad the same question in Henley shall we ?? ;-)

  73. 65. Thank you, Housing supremo.

Jack W will make a splendid Mayoress when your time comes to occupy the Elmbridge civic chair. :)

  74. US Democrats.
Fox now have Obama 3.5 ahead of Clinton in Supers following the decision of two from the Virgin Islands to change from Clinton to Obama.
He is said to have 276, means he really only needs another 75 maximum from the reamining 230 odd to declare.

  75. 72 - Shouldn’t that be the civic bath chair? Anyway, we’ve already incorporated his A*SE into the Coat of Arms (if that’s physically possible)

  76. Latest Rasmussen Presidential and Primary Trackers :

    McCain 46% .. Obama 47%

    Clinton 42% .. Obama 52%

Note - Rasmussen appear to have dropped Clinton from the McCain matchup.

    http://www.rasmussenreports.com/public_content/politics/election_20082/2008_presidential_election/daily_presidential_tracking_poll

    ……………………….

    72/74 :-)

  77. 71. But has there been a resignation at Henley?

Did C & N Labour Party follow party rules in candidate selection, was there an open contest which resulted in a selection on merit. The choice does seem ‘odd’, unless nepotism remains kin deep. Could we conclude that Crewe and Nantwich has become a rotten borough?

  78. Re an earlier comment about Labour County Council seats in Cumbria. The %age majority from 2005 are:

    0% to 10% 8 seats with 6 Cons in 2nd place, 1 Lib Dem and 1 Ind
    10% to 20% 8 seats with 7 Cons in 2nd Place, 1 Lib Dem
    20% to 30% 7 seats with 6 Cons in 2nd place, 1 Lib Dem
    30% to 40% 5 seats
    Over 40% 11 seats
    Labour seats totalled 39.

Thus on a uniform swing of 10%, Labour would lose some 16 seats (~40% of their 2005 number) whilst if it reached 15% the losses would increase to around 23, or ~60% of those won in 2005. A repeat of last week would see %age swings in the low teens compared to the 2005 County Council elections.

  79. 76 Dr Spyn. As Mrs Dale indicates only the box marked ‘date’ needs to be confirmed :

    http://iaindale.blogspot.com/2008/05/boriss-dad-confirms-application-for.html

  80. 50.

Toff = money + Conservative voter
Old Labour Socialist = money + Labour voter

    Please do keep up.

  81. Some things are just too cool for cats …..

    http://s187.photobucket.com/albums/x303/Lepanto_2007/?action=view&current=Catheaven.jpg

    hat tip D.Kos.

  82. 43: Um, you feel you can read my mind? I didn’t know the name of the candidate, have never heard of the Timpsons or whatever money they may have, vaguely saw something about toffs and fostering, and just basically haven’t been paying much attention to the details - I mean, two weeks ago I couldn’t have told you if Crewe was in Cheshire or Hertfordshire, or indeed cared. Hence, I don’t feel I can comment. You, by contrast, feel able to tell me what I think, credit me with secretly thinking as you do, and condemn me for not saying so. D’oh. Why don’t you just post for me and save me the trouble?

  83. These videos just go to show who has got the money for good production’s and who is embracing the modern technology. Labour look so old fashioned now.

  84. 81 Do all new Labour MPs have such a poor grasp of geography?

  85. 81. A bit touchey Nick? ;)

    Surely you don’t condone this sentence from Labour’s Crewe and Nantwich leaflet?;

“Do you oppose making foreign nationals carry an ID card?” (tick)

  86. 84 He blatantly can’t comment on that. As he’s an MP for a Nottinghamshire constituency, when would he need to know exactly where Crewe was - although I think he’s exaggerating when he said it might have been in Hertfordshire. Hope so anyway.

  87. 84 - What does that mean? Does Dunwoody oppose ID cards for forriners, or is she for it? Colour me confused.

  88. 86 It’s a Labour leaflet attacking the Conservative candidate as being typically Tory - i.e. rich, priveleged and against tight controls on asylum seekers. Wait a minute…

  89. 81 Prickly, Nick. Are you a watford fan?!!!!

  90. Meanwhile …. at a rally in Crewe and Nantwich the Labour candidates baby kissing photo opportunity has its casualties :

    http://www.malazanempire.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=4438&d=1204135166

  91. 86. Its attacking the Tory candidate for being opposed to ID cards, but very sneakily dragging racist connotations into the arguement and pandering to the lowest common denominator. Labour are clearly worried they are losing the white working class vote to the BNP, but using subliminal racist propogande like this, isn’t the answer.

  92. 87 - so Dunwoody wants foreigners to carry ID cards at all times? Labour are pretty much running the worst campaign ever, aren’t they?

  93. 81. Thought so. I was right on the button.

  94. 81 Not getting at you but you answered the query on why you thought there was a case for ID cards for Foreign Nationals but ignored my question on what was wrong with asjking to see their passports? There is no case for ID cards for foreigners as they need a passport to enter the UK, whether EU or non EU. That document contains their visa and therefore identifies whether or not they have permission to stay, to work, to study.
Why then a separate ID card with separate systems, processes and resources to manage them?

  95. 91. Heres the leaflet in all its glory;

    http://www.creweandnantwichlabour.org.uk/dont_be_conned_by_tory_boy

The most appalling piece of material I’ve seen from the Labour Party in a long time.

Does anybody remember back in the mid 90’s how that young, gifted Tony Blair inspired the nation? The hope and euphoria was infectious. It really did seem back then that anything was possible for this country. How the Labour Party have fallen, to go from that inspiration to this negative, downbeat, sublinally racist dirge!

  96. 85 I very much hope that Nick Palmer was exagerating.

I do actually expect MPs, who regularly vote on legislation affecting the country, to have at least a basic idea of where in the country major towns are situated.

  97. two weeks ago I couldn’t have told you if Crewe was in Cheshire or Hertfordshire, or indeed cared

Sorry Nick your attempt to feign ignorance convinces no-one. Don’t insult our intelligence with this rot.

  98. 94 LOL Nick are you watching! Labour are *.

Why dont you take early retirement and go with dignity!!!

  99. 50 I didn’t realise that being the son of a key-cutting and shoe repair merchant qualifies one as a ‘toff’ nowadays

It’s what’s known as being well cut and well heeled.

  100. 94
I have to agree, not just for the sake of it, but its truly appalling. Labour’s by election strategy is about as low as their poll ratings.

  101. ID cards are totally pointless if they are only carried by foreigners, how do you prove someone is a foreigner whether they have a ID card or not. Do you go by accent? if so I think we should include anyone north of Watford in the foreigner category. Hang on that is probably Labour’s next move just more likely anyone south of Watford instead.

Where is Nick Palmer getting this stuff about it being Conservative policy to get foreigners to carry ID cards does he have any proof this is the case?

  102. Meanwhile …. The Conservative Candidate in Crewe and Nantwich denies rumours that he’s an out of touch toff by holding an ‘at home’ meet and greet for ordinary voters :

    http://internetservices.readingeagle.com/blog/moviehouse/leopard.jpg

  103. O/T Chelsea and Man Utd games both goaless after 30 mins.

  104. 99. The only positive is that I suspect this will have little or no impact on the overall result. I think/hope enough of the residents in Crewe will be able to see through this nonsense.

  105. 98 PfP. :-)

  106. 59 Good effort, Henry - one more service break would have returned 10/1.

  107. 100.

Where is Nick Palmer getting this stuff about it being Conservative policy to get foreigners to carry ID cards does he have any proof this is the case?

Nick said that? Well the leaflet says the Tories are OPPOSED to making foreigners carry ID cards, so Nick is contradicting the leaflet?

  108. 18. “You feel this is racist?”

You’re totally right Nick, its not racist. Its xenophobic, a distinction that people fail to make correctly these days. I wonder, is xenophobia acceptable in the Labour Party these days? So much has changed since 1997!!

  109. 102 Man U 1-0 Ronaldo penalty

  111. Nick Palmer didn’t know (or indeed care) where Crewe was until a couple of weeks ago? I don’t whether to be appalled by the ignorance of a Member of Parliament or admire his candour in admitting his ignorance. How lucky the good people of Broxtowe are!

  112. 107. Anything can be justified if it serves the higher purpose of crushing the Tories into dust.

  113. 109. Thanks, I hadn;t seen his comment there.

  114. re 77……….my estimate is on local knowledge…..purely on stats would have had Cons in both Barrow & Carlisle in total control this year…..they aren’t.

  115. an interesting snippet to add to the ID card for foreigners leaflet is Tamsin Dunwoody’s pledges. on her website under action plan, of her four key pledges one is to

    • Campaign for a sensible approach to immigration that takes account of genuine concerns.

some real traditional labour values there, campaigning on immigration having just increases taxes on the low paid.

  116. re Nick @ 81….perhaps that’s the difference between the North West and the East Midlands……up here Timpsons shoes were where you went when you couldn’t afford K-Shoes (as in Kendal)….they use to have a very large operation in Wythenshawe (ask Mrs Goggins), but they diversified into shoes repairs and key-cutting..
….so, it is either “Cobblers to Timpson”, or “Timpson has the key to unlocking Crewe”!

  117. Meanwhile …. those seeking new employment as the Liberal Democrat Campaign Supremo in Crewe and Nantwich appear to lack a little enthusiam :

    http://www.funnyphotos.net.au/images/hillary-clinton-faces-of-the-2008-election-campaig.jpg

  118. Brian Paddick’s campaign diary, in the Mail on Sunday, is the saddest political account that I have read in ages.

    http://www.mailonsunday.co.uk/pages/live/femail/article.html?in_article_id=565425&in_page_id=1879

  119. The point Nick Palmer appears to miss is not that a particular phrase can or cannot be justified, but what this style of Labour campaign says about their general position as a party of government.

Their entire campaign seems to rest on:

1 Their candidate is ‘One of us’ while the Tory is ‘One of THEM’ - a blatant appeal to their core, class based vote.

2 They are ‘tough on yobs’ while the Tories are ’soft on yobs’ - so who has been running the country for the past 11 years?

    And that’s about it.

If this is the best justification Labour can provide for voting for them 11 years after they took power then they deserve to come third.

  120. re my 115……….sorry, shouldn’t have said Mrs Goggins…it is Paul who represents Wythenshawe (remember when Dave first met a hoodie?)…….Mrs G is clearly Postman Pat’s post mistress, and we shouldn’t mention small post offices, whic are being closed due to Gvt insistance that 2,500 have to be closed.

One of my Post Offices is under threat, and we thought about getting Postman Pat to help in the campaign, but I was put off by the daily charge of almost £2k by the image rights company. I could have found the money, but it wouldn’t have been a good use of the resource.

(bye…..now going back to watch the second half of the football)

  121. Who gives a flying fcuk which of the main three Tory parties wins in Crewe and Nantwich? What difference can it possibly make to the lives of the British? Why do so many of you keep playing the Ugly Beauty Pageant game?

As for ID cards, only Nazi or Communist parties would be able to defend them ideologically and no-one is able to defend them practically. Does anyone really believe they will be introduced into the UK in the next decade? Possibly only Brownstuff and Tony B Liar and their brown-nosers.

    Malcolm

  122. 117. Mike - Clegg appears to have done nothing to promote Paddick’s campaign! Why was he abandoned?

  123. @117:

There’s an entire series of The Thick of It in Paddick’s diaries.

It potrays him as an enthusiastic yet confused child. It a fascinating insight.

  124. 120. Your two sentences directly contradict eachother. The current government wants id cards. they current opposition is opposed to them. if there is a change of government then these id cards are off the agenda. seems like a clear difference to the lives of British people to me.

  125. 120. ID cards in general, can be justified, quite easily, the problem is this particular scheme is horrendous, intrusive and has absolutely no prospect of keeping to budget and achieving the aims intended of it.

  126. Brief comment on youtube videos whilst half-time is going-on.

    Conservative:

Professional, upbeat, personable, family man, local, Timpson comes over as a decent person and Cameron provides good support and all of it focusses on C&N. Plays well

    Liberal Democrats:

I really didn’t like the passport photo/ interview in a Prison cell feel of it. Was someone speaking whilst we look at that wall with a single poster on it (what did it say?).Very depressing

    Labour:

Is David Milliband standing? I thought he already had a seat? Why was the candidate’s head cut in half for most of the video? Oh dear more Gordon presentation.

    Back to the footy

  127. 113. It was not feasibly possible for Cons to take control of Carlisle this year, it would require them to win seven seats, when less then four could realistically be considered marginal. The Conservatives gained more votes in the Carlisle Constituency this year then Labour….

  128. 120
A lot of people do care, and dont share your view. Hard as it may be, just accept it.

  129. 122 - Yes - slightly odd that he was surprised to be asked to provide leads for fund-raising!

  130. URRRZZZZZZZZ 0-2 - Play up Pompey, Pompey play up!

  131. ID cards are a bit like Europe here - always good for some excitement. :-) The argument to have ID cards for foreign nationals (also known as biometric visas - the card is issued by the consulate and indicates your visa status: it includes fingerprints so you can prove it’s you) rather than rely on passports is that they have a biometric element, which most foreign passports don’t. Does Cameron support them? He certainly does, and makes a distinction between having them for people from foreign countries and British people (which I think is logical enough, since if you’re British you don’t need a visa). See

    http://www.theyworkforyou.com/debate/?id=2008-01-09a.296.1

Yeah, Jimbo is right that I was exagerrating slightly when I said that Crewe might be in Hertfordshire. I vaguely knew it was in the northwest. It’s not something I’ve ever needed to know before.

  132. 121 - Clegg did a string of campaign visits in support of Paddick’s campaign.

I think this is seleted ‘highlights’ of Paddick’s diary, a lot is missing.

  133. 130. And doesnt apply to EU citizens.

  134. 118: well, Park Town Boy, it was you who raised the phrase. Now I’ve put the case for the phrase, you say actually you necessarily mean the phrase, you meant the whole style of the campaign. Now as must by now be apparent, I’m not following the campaign closely, but aren’t you extrapolating from this phrase to the whole campaign? Have you seen all the leaflets?

  135. er…”didn’t necessarily”

Back to work so offline for a bit!

  136. The Conservative on is good apart from the moobs on E. Timpson Esq. Get in the gym podgy boy. The NuLab one looks like the last transmission from a disintegrating space station. Couldn’t be bothered to watch the one from the Bar Chart Party, obviously.

  137. Afternoon all :)

Re: 117 - Well, I’ve read this and it doesn’t really add up to much. I met Brian on just the one occasion and found him affable, intelligent and totally lacking in charisma.

In 2000 and 2004 this might not have mattered so much but in the Boris v Ken show, the LDs needed a candidate to out-charisma these two and that person probably doesn’t exist in any party. Paddick was NOT the right candidate and I imagine the eight London LD MPs realised this would be an impossible election. Would we have done better with Greg Dyke for example ? Hard to see how.

I think, with some more experience and training, Paddick could make a good candidate in a reasonable seat. I hope this experience doesn’t put him off politics completely though reading this site might :)

  138. 77. This hides the nature of the Libdems, they are quite a few Conservative seats, especially in South Lakes, and Eden, that have the Libdems just behind, with the margins decreasing every election. Next year it is unlikely that candidates will have the cover of a General Election, and the following protection of a high turnout.
This will most certainly be positive in Carlisle, with Labour seats potentially melting away to the Cons, but elsewhere, we could see a real squeese on Tory seats.

  139. 133 I’ve seen several leaflets and looked at the website - and they all carry the same message.

  140. chelsea at 10/1 for the title looks good value

  141. 18.Thanks for the reply, to one of the concerns I raised.
On the leaflets, why single out that one issue, distort others position, and send them out specifically into those areas ripe for the BNP. The Labour Party all too often uses semantices to pretend they didn’t suggest what we all can see they did.
Couple this with some of the rhetoric coming from your side over Boris and a picture is emerging not unlike that connected with Hillary Clinton’s campaign.
‘Oh we just found a picture of him wearing a turban’.

There is a bitter taste left in the mouths of those who care to look too closely at the ingredients of this cocktail. It does you no credit.

  142. Yeaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah !!!!!!!!!
    Portsmouth 0 Fulham 1

  143. 142 LOL f*** off reading!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  144. 138. Even Labour members don;t like the campaign literature. Over on Labourhome they are spitting feathers about the stuff thats going out

  145. 143,Go to Hull!

  146. 145 LOL thats quite funny from you!

  147. Man u 2-0 Giggs

  148. 140.

    Maybe for next season!

  149. Just get yer money on Pompey in the real big game next Sat.

    Play up Pompey

  150. 147 - scum will be champions then :(

  151. LD candidate going on about “real people” - what exactly is the alternative? Robots?

The tory one is by far the most effective, in fact the others are probably destructive in their amateurishness. All it needs is someone with a digital video, a decent editing programme and a few hours to spare, it’s not difficult.

I’ve changed my mind, I think the Tories may squeak this one, if Tom Watson is running labour’s campaign I hope they get pummelled into the ground and he’s left staked out naked on the train tracks as punishment.

  152. From the Riverside Stadium. Middlesborough v Man City.

    Sven-Nil !

  153. 152 - 8-0

  154. 152/3 - misinformed, it’s 7-1

  155. 152 It’s not over yet, hop springs eternal.

  156. 152 - Hmm, I don’t know what’s going on there, are they trying to show Shinawatra what they think? Maybe they are showing what happens when the manager is cast adrift.

City had better get an amazing manager if Sven does go, the fans are incredibly loyal but there are limits.

  157. Fulham stay up!

  158. MAN U CHAMPIONES!

Watford next season? More chance than Lab winning the next GE HO HO!

  159. 136 yes i noticed his man boobs too but refrained from making a comment out of politeness……

  160. Big result of the day - Quins 26 - 36 Rhinos! :)

    Get in!

  161. Next week - stuff Pompey c’mon the

  162. 161. Bluebirds?!

  163. Did ‘Arry get a huge Harrods bag stuffed with fifties?

  164. I just watched the videos. Edward buries everybody else.

  165. 131 “I vaguely knew it was in the northwest. It’s not something I’ve ever needed to know before.” Nick Palmer MP (LOL)

But it was only a few days ago he was telling us it was only an hour down the road from Broxtowe so he’d go and help if needed.

    I think a new sign-off is needed.

  166. for Gaz @ 138…….are you likely to stand next year?……you might have to start being nice to me!

  167. 146 Ave It’s going to Hull and back !!

Hat tip - Only Fools ..

  168. 166 hehe!!!! Think i’ll watch the rangers game on wednesday……

  169. 166 I just had a truly horrible thought

Please tell me Jack W and Ave It ‘08 are not the same person? I don’t think I could deal with my illusions shattering like that.

  170. 164.

” just watched the videos. Edward buries everybody else.”

Yes, he does look a bit like an undertaker.

  171. 168 Test. No. ‘Ave It’ failed to get elected to the Jack W Committee For PB Safety having trailed in twenty second place in the elections just behind the Watford branch of Liberal Democrats Arses4U !!

  172. 168 HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! Funniest post ever!

  173. 155. Everton 5th, Villa 6th. Ah well. 8 point profit on my spread bet. But sadly we did not see the triumph of hop over experience.

  174. 169. You know, it’s just possible…certainly there could be overlap. Doubtless the varied personnel behind the tiresome Jack W character occasionally post under other identities too - if only to relieve the tedium.

  175. 171 Ave it - In saying that, I can only assume you have yet to hear my “Kipper Tie” joke. Having given it an airing over Christmas, I feel it’s still rather early to bring it out again.

  176. Meanwhile in Stoke on trent - 16 miles from Crewe, A Labour MP praises the BNP…

    http://www.bnp.org.uk/2008/05/bnp-had-good-local-candidates-labour-mp/

So now we know where the Labour C&N leaflets come from.. :-)

  177. Labour Home are furious about the campaign literature:

    http://www.labourhome.org/story/2008/5/10/21924/0903

I bet it ends up in the papers tomorrow. Hopefully that’ll stop labour from ever doing anything like this again. I hope the internet starts to make literature like this, obsolete as they’re given an airing beyond their target audience.

  178. 175 Er why not save it till this Christmas - it gives us all something to look forward to….

  179. 173 Just hopping over to Spreadfair to collect my £925 profit on the season’s points outcome of a certain, cough, Midlands footy team.
