Will they stop naming streets after Roger?

August 29th, 2008

    You shouldn’t gloat….but…

I am sure Roger, who over the years has been one of our most prolific contributors, will forgive me for publishing this. But check out comment one from this thread from May 26th 2005.

I’m on holiday in the Pyrenees and spotted this street sign this morning in the fabulous town of Foix and have been trying to work out how to put it on the site.

  1. re posted from previous thread:

308 - Martin Day. BHO didn’t smoke crack. Regardless of this, I’m not sure I would (and I’m not obama fan - if you don’t believe me look here http://schneiderhome.blogspot.com/2008/08/obamas-arseheaded-tax-plan.html)

    and

315 - Benny, why the Palin love?

  2. Mike, he might still be right…

  3. If the Democrats start turning this election into a crusade against the Bible, catalyzed by the Palin selection/her creationist beliefs, they’re more intent on losing this election than I thought…

  4. I think Roger does rue that comment.

  5. 3 - come on, highlighting creationism isn’t a, attacking the bible or b, going to be the democrat strategy. 44% of Kerry voters were creationists.

  6. 5. What do you have to believe in, exactly, to be a creationist?

  7. 4 - ba, boom, chchchc. Like it stjohn

  8. A bit unfair Mike, besides, according to my Crystal Ball, Roger will be proven right.

  9. Reposted from other thread re Palin’s creationism…

320 - oh dear, if true she’ll certainly be under fire. While being a much more devout nation than the UK - creationism is still pretty fringe in the US and has all sorts of implications for the separation of church and state for example.

  10. 332. She appeals to me for a start, Dan. And I expect to millions of middle-class Americans. I also expect her to pick up a good solid, ‘blue collar’ following.

  11. 6 - runnymede, I define creationist as professing a belief in creationism. This is defined as believing in the inerrancy of the biblical account of creation (an usually everything else in the bible). The more nuanced creationists will not equate inerrant with literal truth, so I don’t in my definition.

  12. 3. makes it a hell of a lot easier to link mccain/palin to bush/cheney though. not just the creationist bit mind you, all of her extreme right wing views hurt mccain by association.

  13. 5- “Highlighting” creationism is attacking the Bible if it involves criticism of creationism. That’s fine for a debating society or a chat amongst friends, but a terrible move for a Democratic Party already highly suspected of hostility toward Christianity.

  14. 10. so exactly the same groups that biden appeals to? at best then they cancel each other out.

  15. You may want to look out for a “Rue Tim” on your travels too:

“I don’t think he has a hope of being a candidate for president” Tim

Oh - and somebody called “Nick Palmer” has his twopenneth worth:

“I can’t see Obama as presidential candidate next time”

They both have much to “rue” over!

  16. 12- What are her extreme right wing views (i.e., views rejected even by most conservatives?). I think your going a bit far here, based on what we know about her. As James Schnieder noted above, even 44% of Kerry’s voters were creationists. Were they all extreme right-wingers?

  17. 1. That one on the smoking Crack is ‘up in the air’ - pardon the pun!

The Obama - Larry Sinclair dynamic is most interesting. If the allegations have any truth to them then McCain will win by 60-70%!

  18. 14- Biden probably won’t have any special appeal to female voters (except the kind who like cocky loudmouth jack*sses).

  19. 11. Ok that’s a fairly clear, if hardline, definition.

But I wonder if the 44% of Kerry voters who were supposedly ‘creationists’ really believed in the literal truth of the Genesis account, rather than more fuzzy conceptions whereby a creative force was involved at some point but it wasn’t necessarily all wrapped up in six days with monkeys on Tuesday and fish on Friday, or whatever.

  20. Who is Sarah Palin…? SaS: sorry mate, you - and your fellow rebellious scunts - are fecked!

  21. 9 - no its not 44% of Kerry voters were creationists. Its a very common belief in the US.

  22. One assumes Palin’s Alaska record won’t come back to bite her…

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/americas/7588542.stm

  23. Hahaha!

If it’s “Rodger” it’s almost obligatory to gloat! ;-)

  24. 13 - I agree it wouldn’t be wise but I still argue that attacking creationism is not the same as “attacking the bible”. How can it be?

  25. 20- Well argued!

  26. Palin is an interesting choice. Obviously risky. Perhaps she’s the harbinger of a new strategy, the one suggested by several articles published in the last days. Separation from Bush.

The logic could be roughly along these lines: McCain was not in any shape to win a “new politics” election. He had to go too far to the right. So he used the summer to establish the election as a partisan slug fest. The Democrats have taken that up and delivered a very effective McCain-is-BushIII-don’t-elect-him convention. Thing is, many voters tune in only with the conventions. So perhaps McCain will now try to re-cast himself as a modern conservative, maverick and independent mind. Palin is both modern and an assurance for the base that things won’t get out of hand.

It would be a very cunning strategy and certainly the best “active” strategy McCain has. Still, I do feel due to McCain’s age and the very real possibility that Palin could have to take over, he has sacrificed a fair share of the “experience” theme. Not so much directly with the voters (VPs are not that important), but with the media. If this election had been a referendum on Obama’s personality, McCain would have had a good chance of winning. Personally, I don’t think he can establish a new narrative for winning in his own right in just two months.

Either way, the GOP convention is that much more interesting now. If McCain gets a strong bounce out of it, his chances are certainly not bad.

  27. Oh God!

John McCain! A bint who looks like a dimmie BBC front-person! Geesh!!!

  28. 18. and does palin have any special appeal to male working class voters? its laughable how much of a big deal you folks are making out of this, the VPs influence will be minimal in this election.

  29. 18 - Do I come across as a bit bitter if I say the kind who like cocky loudmouth jack*sses are not that uncommon in my experience?

Yes? Well I won’t say it then.

  30. 24- I’m John Q. Democrat and I’m here not to attack the Bible but merely to attack what it teaches…

Hmmmmm… pretty thin ice. Better to just not go out on that pond…

  31. 24 - It’s an obvious way of defusing it as a line of attack, James. And given Obama’s metropolitan elite image, a *very* dangerous road to start down.

  32. 19 - how is it hardline?

  33. SA: 114/5

  34. 29- Touche! You’ve got me there!

  35. Mike, will that prediction go down as No1 in the Roger hall of fame on PB.com?

  36. S&S, out of interest, do you believe in the lietral truth of the creation account in Genesis?

  37. 36. Oops..’literal’…

  38. Mr Schneider - you are completely right on this one. Creationism isn’t an issue with swing voters; if it had been, Dubya would never have made it to the White House.

The Democrats need to highlight the religious issue like they need a hole in the head. They should get over Palin’s religious beliefs and push her hard on the economy. That’s usually the best way to divide the Pat Robertsons of this world from moderate conservatives and independents.

  39. A non-political friend has pointed out that Mrs Palin is “foxy”. This quite frankly could outweigh her two years’ gubernatorial experience with some (a lot of) people.

  40. What if McCain now says I only intend to serve one term… ?

    GOP landslide?

  41. 36- No, I don’t. I don’t know many people who do either. But I do know a lot of people with varying levels of attachment to the Bible who bristle at the idea of it being attacked, particularly by the usual suspects (i.e., the Democrats).

  42. 39 - If that really counted for much then politicians would generally be above average in attractiveness and attractive young women would have a particularly good record in elections. I am not sure that’s backed up by any evidence.

  43. 38- As far as I can tell, Palin is not an aspiring modern-day Torquemada. It seems it’s just the Kos crowd that’s trying to portray her that way.

  44. Substitute ‘Church’ for ‘Bible’ and ‘Whigs’ for ‘Democrats’ and it all sounds rather like English politics in the 18th century…

  45. If I had a foot, I’d shoot it in the morning. I’d shoot it in the evening, and try to shoot it in the afternoon…!

I’d praise ‘Tone Blair, even though he is a Knut, and assume that John McCain is senile, because everyone is stupid!

God help us! No more bets on John McCain! <i?Armoured-Dinner-Jacket to lead the world! With racist preachers from “Democrat-land”.

Cameron should leg-it to Ireland. I will be going soon! :D

  46. 40 - I don’t think saying “I’ll be a lame duck President from Day One!!!” would be a line to bring the house down.

  47. LOL” Deal old Roger, as perceptive as ever. :D

  48. As far as I can fathom, Palin is not a Creationist. All she has said on the subject is something like:

‘I agree that creationism can be taught in schools and, (wait fot it) as long as it’s taught alongside Darwinism and Evolution. All knowledge should be taught’.

Excuse if not word for word correct, but the above is the gist of her statement.

  49. 40 RodCrosby. You mean landslide loss ??

One term = an old lame duck !!

  50. Maybe Larry Sinclair will come back to haunt Obama? A real pain in the arse for him!

  51. OK; does this help McCain?

With the base, yes, it clearly helps as she has all the correct views - esp. pro-life, creationist. (Philippe, btw, creationism / ID is for the theology class not the science class. You disturb me with your views here.)

With unaligned women, yes. She is a “soccer Mom” like many others.

With “Hillary” women, not really. That pro-life thing really does work against her. They might be more prepared to back the - errr - more nuanced McCain without Palin.

With unaligned men, probably not. A heartbeat from the Presidency, and all she’s done - really - is be the mayor of a town of 8,000 people and be the runner-up in Miss Alaska.

    Masterstoke? Probably not.

Good gamble? Not a bad one. But it “uprisks” the ticket. Palin hasn’t really had the searchlight pointed at her. And Alaska is a funny place.

  52. 45.. Fluffy your losing it. Lol. :)

  53. 40- McCain can’t do that. It would be a monumentally foolish concession and would hand the White House to the Democrats.

  54. 42. I know politics has been described as showbiz for ugly people, but there are definitely people who are influenced by the perceived attractiveness or lack thereof of leading politicians.

Some people have, only half tongue in cheek, asked if a bald man could win an election in the UK again (lucky Churchill didn’t live in the modern media age). Part of the success of Tony Blair and David Cameron is that they are personable, attractive people. I am not saying either would worry Brad Pitt in a poll of attractive fellas, but it is an issue….one that should probably be investigated by some academic!

  55. SA: 134/6

  56. 54. I completely agree blue alex. She brings glamour to the GOP side of the race.

  57. This post is brilliant. Excellent stuff, Mr Smithson!

    39. Yuh, my first thought was that she’s quite hot. Then again, the words “my first thought” are enough to make that fairly predictable.

  58. 53. What if he’s not so explicit? But says something like “one day I expect Sarah Palin to be the first woman President?”

  59. I’ve just rediscovered a £4 bet I placed on Palin to be next VP, not nominee, at 33/1 on Betfair. Nice surprise.

  60. 55. Aye - a ODI whitewash for England after losing the Test series?

  61. 38 - Jack, what in particular is there to attack her on the economy?

  62. The fact that she’s hot is not going to turn away any votes.

this really is a fascinating election

  63. 62 - so, David, any headlines spring to mind?

  64. Oh dear, Obama’s campaign have already fallen into the trap of attacking her as inexperienced!

    Don’t DO THAT, idiots!

  65. 63 (cont) “McCain Outfoxes Obama”?

  66. 58- That’s a great line, and maybe he’ll even use some version of it in his acceptance speech or on the campaign trail. But he can’t just throw away that trump card; all first-term presidents find it very useful no matter what their intentions are. And he certainly shouldn’t himself be raising doubts about his fitness to serve.

  67. 63 “Ob the Builder up against the Palins”

  68. 48 - weathercock but creationism should certainly not be taught in schoools side by side with evolution. that would suggest creationism is a scientific, as opposed to religious understanding. Fine for religious studies, not for biology.

  69. 62
David, do you think people vote for someone because they are hot? .. mind you if Miss Gt Britain was a Tory candidate…..

  70. McCain on now…

  71. 64- They just can’t help themselves! Early jitters, no doubt.

  72. 65 - brilliant

  73. SA: 142/7

  74. 63 - Stunning Sarah set to serve?

Or a pictoral comparion with Des o’Connor and Melanie Sykes’ chat show?

Has she moved Betfair at all presidentially?

  75. 66. It could work for McCain to present himself as a safe “transition figure”… He could turn the age issue to his advantage if he confronts it head-on…

  76. Outfoxes Obama, I like that one!

  77. Obama campaign first reaction to Palin VP selection: ‘She only has two years high-level political experience so is unfit to be VICE PRESIDENT; our guy has four years high-level political experience so is fit to be PRESIDENT.’ Why are they doing this?! They’re playing right into McCain’s hands.

  78. 69 - I think some women voted for Blair because they fancied him, certainly.

I think McCain needs to take risks and have them come off to win this election. Safety first would lead to a narrow loss. He’s going for the win, not for a close race by taking risks like this.

  79. 51 “the runner-up in Miss Alaska”

Third place was a moose. Literally, a moose….

  80. 54 - There is an element of truth in what you say. However, I think the key is not that people want to do all manner of naughty things with you but that you look as if you are not falling apart physically (and perhaps mentally). I am not sure many people really went “phwoarrr!” over Blair in the 1990s or Cameron now but both look as if they have done alright genetically.

I liked a comment from somebody on 538 who said something along the lines of “I will be voting with my pen1s for the first time since Dole/Kemp in ‘96″.

  81. 68. Agree with your statement. Will have to discover if Palin means for Creationism to be taught only in relgious classes; and not taught as a science.

  82. Re looks. I asked my wife who is fairly astute in these matters . If there there were three male candidates, two were geeks and the other seriously good looking would it affect the way you vote? She replied. “Probably, subconsciously, but who is going to vote for Brown??.
    I though that very astute!

  83. 77 0 It is totally totally idiotic. She has executive experience too rather than 4 years trying to become President.

This is probably the bear trap McCain was setting and the donkeys are lumbering right into it.

I’m laying Obama again before his price moves out next week.

  84. So - is McCoffin-dodger’s best strategy to promise the voters that he will die at some point in his first term?

  85. Am listening/watching (NPR and NBC) to McCain’s introduction of Palin.

Crows is VERY strange. Sounds at times like bunch of out-of-control frat boys.

  86. re 48 that’s seems fine as long as what’s being taught is thar creationism is a complete load of bollocks

  87. McCain last traded at 41.5 at Intrade, highest for a long time. I will not be surprised if he comes close to 45 today, but I guess a large Gallup bounce for Obama can take away some of the Palin momentum in the betting markets.

And I’m still not laying McCain :-)

  88. 54 “should probably be investigated by some academic”

Betfair reviews a paper showing Australian and New Zealander children in mid-2007 picked out McCain, Obama and Clinton as primary frontrunners just by looking at their photos.

    http://preview.tinyurl.com/5ntkgh

  89. 81 - whenever creationists try to sound reasonable they try to triangulate next to evolution as a “theory”. That’s almost worse. Trying to slip it in on the sly.

  90. From Wikipedia:

    “Palin is strongly pro-life”

Go on disgruntled Clinton supporters. Vote for her!

She is also a “Christian: Assemblies of God”

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Assemblies_of_God

Despite the name, it doesnt seem like one of those nutter American churches (or maybe it is?)

  91. 85 - Crowd that is. Now sound ok, but earlier they delayed McCain’s start and actually booed school teachers (at least that’s what it sounded like). People just behind McC were looking baffled & slightly disturbed at section of crowd.

BUT now McC is in his stride

  92. 90 - its pentecostal and massive. If you define that as nutter then yes.

  93. Great speech, fabulous music. Shame we Conservatives will probably lose this one! So near…!

  94. Democrat pitbull congressmen already calling Palin the next ‘Dan Quayle,’ ‘Geraldine Ferraro,’ and showing poor McCain judgment because ‘nobody has ever heard of her.’ Apparently Sen. Salazar hasn’t spent any time at PB or he would have already heard a lot about her! Funny, too, how high-level Dems aren’t hesitating to throw their own first female VP, Ferraro, off the train.

    http://time-blog.com/real_clear_politics/2008/08/clyburn_salazar_attack.html

  95. She’s got a pleasant voice

  96. Sarah Palin and family look like a million bucks. Husband is “Desperate Housewives” dream. Kids are very appealing, esp. little girl with pageboy haircut.

    Young Middle America

  97. is it palin then? finding out anything on this phone is tricky

  98. 94 - They need to engage brains before opening gobs.

  99. McCain’s birthday AND Palin’s 20th anniversary.

    Pretty incredible TV/radio so far.

And Todd is a member of my old union: United Steelworkers

  100. Radio Five saying people in the office saying FIT!

  101. 92- To be honest, most American Christians arent exactly on the level. Their belief that America has been specialy blessed by God over other countries is just insane. “Tough Sh*t Nigeria. God loves us more!”

  102. 90.”Go on disgruntled Clinton supporters. Vote for her!”

In the longer term this VP choice is a win win situation for both McCain and Obama. It will probable shore up core support in both the Republican and Democrat camps.
But in the short term, will it negate any Obama post speech/convention bounce and give McCain and the upcoming Republican convention a of touch of the political stardust it so desperately needs?

  103. 96 - that was my point on the previous thread, she emphasises a kind of america which BHO just isn’t. I think part of her appeal, to McCain, was how she could push this dichotomy between the two campaigns. Lots of Americans vote on “values” or perceived “values”. Palin could help, even if she gets pasted by Biden in the debate.

  104. 98- Also highly dangerous to criticize Palin by associating her with Ferraro. There’s obviously no reason to dredge up that name nobody’s heard for a generation except to suggest that they’re both losers because they’re both women. That’s another road the Dems shouldn’t be going down in this election…

  105. The polls in a week will be crucial.

  106. 94 - Just part of the spin cycle, will come out with the wash if there’s any there there.

  107. 101 - I think that’s part of the Civil Religion and that secularists, liberals, and atheists can, and do, suffer from that affliction too.

  108. 99 And their son is off to Iraq on September 11. Symbolism, anyone?

  109. 104 - A great way to undo all the good work of the last week. They should just let Palin have her day and keep emphasising how great Obama is.

Who are the Democrat strategists? Do people PAY them?

  110. Sorry folks,

Forgot about the cricket. McCain throws away victory in the manner of Rusty McBean throws away Her Majesty’s gold reserves. Needless to say I an now observing Sky401 (instead of Sky501)! :D

    Sorry weathercock lost what…?

  111. Palin seems so sincere and natural, quite unlike a politician!
    A winner, I’d say….

  112. 107- “I think that’s part of the Civil Religion and that secularists, liberals, and atheists…”

    Not sure about the Atheists!

  113. 109- They should be running to the bank to cash their checks from McCain/Palin 2008!

  114. 110- Just don’t watch Sky509!

  115. You sly old bugger, Mac!

Now, that’s how to choose a Veep, Obama.

  116. 99. I was wondering about the significance of the date on a previous thread…

  117. She is very attractive. She will repeatedly be on the front cover of every woman’s magazine for the next few months at least.

  118. 85 “Crowd is VERY strange. Sounds at times like bunch of out-of-control frat boys.”

They probably are - didn’t they still have a mess of spare tickets for this event yesterday?

  119. Palin on the box …. dear God she’s going to have up her game and McCain looks in turn apprehensive and hopeful !!

Just as well that the Veep doesn’t count for too much !!

  120. McCain and Palin : Beauty and the Beast?

Actually a good move on McCain’s part, because if nothing else it’s hard and very churlish for the Dems to attack a babe ;)

Perhaps more seriously (or is it?) from the few times I’ve seen her she looks competent and assured without being shrill or scary.

Time will tell if this is an inspired choice or not, but right now, Obama isn’t the only fresh faced one

  121. Note that Palin is not just a former beauty queen, but more important a former girls basketball star.

Now in the modern USA girls/women’s basketball is a BIG deal in several ways. First, very popular in many places among diverse groups. Second, high standard of play including very sharp elbows.

“I didn’t go into government to do the safe or easy things.”

“The people of America expect us to seek public office and to serve for the right reasons. And the right reason is to challenge the status quo and serve the common good.”

  122. 112 - not necessarily putting the agency of God having decided on American exceptionalism but the impulse and results are the same.

  123. Palin is a good speaker! She does not whistle like Obama  does that irrate anyone else when he speaks?

  124. wicket 160/8

  125. Palin = the hand of Rove

  126. 119 - Jack you are not often wrong but you are wrong today. She’s very good!

Seems controlled, level-headed and she speaks well.

  127. SA: 161/8

  128. 121- My cousin is a former college basketball player at a major university. I followed her college career, of course, and the experience is somewhat like military service is for a lot of men; it instills discipline, calm, composure, and of course teamwork skills. I think she shows the effects of that.

  129. So far she’s doing a pretty good job. Perhaps not with the Auld Jacobite vote. But with millions of swing votes, so far so go. Certainly no dear in the heads lights. Or moose for that matter.

Honoring Geraldine Ferarro and Hillary Clinton very classy. Even with scattered boos.

  130. The Dem convention looked like a pretty self-satisfied lovefest for the discredited Clintons and the dubious Ted Kennedy. Obama *did* fall into the trap of looking too complacent.

It looked like the arugula eating democrats were determined to alienate as many Joe Sixpacks as they can.

Personally I don’t much like what I see of Biden- a professional windbag epitomising Washington insider-dom.

Palin could look pretty good in the debates.

I think that -despite everything- unless McCain actually self destructs, this is going to be at least as close as 2000.

  131. She’s closing the book on Hillary. I’d love to be a fly on the wall in her house…. :)

  132. 126. Beat me to it David Roe. I think she’s sensational. She also contrasts with Obama in being likeable/normal. She connects extremely well. I think she is an inspired choice.

  133. 126 David R. We’ll see …. she appears like what she is - Mayor of a small town who became Govenor of a tiny state.

First rule of Veep - Do no harm. The jury is out.

  134. Good speech from Palin. Dem’s beware! ;)

  135. Movement in BF presidential market now. About time.

  136. Celinda Lake (top Democratic pollster) on NPR: “Certaily admire the choice a great deal…. Shows that Republicans are very concerned about the women’s vote, and they should be.”

    {what about Sarah Palin’s appeal to Hillary supporters?}

CL: was problem for Obama before Dem convention, but not after. GOP problem with women is McCain.

  137. 130 - it was a bit of a weird rock concert wasn’t it.

  138. 132 stjohn. I don’t go in for “PB Groupthink” …. see earlier on Pawlenty !!

PB has a tendency to overreact to some events and the Veep picks of both parties show that. Cool heads are required not headless group chickens.

  139. Not convinced with that performance from Palin. Weak start, sounding a bit village, improved to pretty reasonable towards the end and then lost a lot with a confused conclusion. I probably heard about 90% of it, so may have missed them but where were the soundbites for the news?

I agree with Jack - if she’s not going to get well beaten by Biden in the debates, she’s going to have to improve markedly. Still, she’s got another go next week with a friendly audience.

  140. stjohn @ 126

Spot on! She looks “normal”. How often can you say that about politicians of any party?

  141. Obama out to 1.71 and Mccain into 2.58 in the POTUS market.

  142. Yes, this Palin looks good (politically)! I was impressed by her speech - it was good!

I am pretty sure the Rupublicans are going to win this! To put it another waythe things that the democrats object to her: Religion, abortion etc. All fire the Republican base. Whilst McCain reaches out into the centre. Obama on the other hand puts people off theough his colour, Liberal elitism and background. I think in terms of electoral appeal the Republicans appeal more to the voters of the election come election day than do the Democrats. The other interesting thing was how out the last presidential election was in the polls to the result. If this over-weighting to Democrats again then the Republicans should win possibly breaching 50%!

  143. SA: 170/9

  144. 133 - Ole Campaign Manager, I’m with you on this one. Somewhat underwhelmed though I doubt she’ll make any horrendous gaffes. I’d guess the polls in two weeks time post conventions will provide the best indicators of opinion…and then on to the campaign proper.

  145. SA: all out. Englnd Win! And Palin as well. What a day! :) :) :)

  146. New thread - How do the Republicans match this?

  147. 138. Jack W. On the other hand when you see star quality you have to react quickly if you hope to make some money.

The other thing she has going for her is novelty. Obama fatigue has been setting in after months and months of exposure. Not really his fault. She’s a fresh face and I can’t see the voters getting enough of her and her family between now and the election.

  148. Samit Patel - Man-of-the-match!

I feel sorry for Monty; no Antiguan millions for him! Ave it! :D

  149. #146

That is not a bold statement! ;)

  150. In retrospect, this is all making the Biden pick seem even worse than it did at first. By the same token, an alternative pick like Warner or Bayh is looking even better; even a Hillary choice looks like it may have been better, in retrospect!

  151. 133 - Granted. Real question is, how does she handle national media onslaught, both immediately and out on the campaign trail.

Must repeat, am personally pleased by McCain’s selection of Governor Palin. Just think its great that both Hawaii and Alaska have got a great dog in this fight.

–First, because HI and AK are the only state’s younger than I am (born under a 48-star flag).

–Second, because, if our President or VP is from one of America’s youngest states, that means that the USA remains at heart Young America.

  152. “If, and it’s a big if, he runs as the Democratic candidate he would gain votes as being a devoted family man, devout Christian and brilliant speaker. He would also have trouble in south for obvious reasons.

Also bear in mind that there is no obvious Republican candidate who will carry the Christian vote in such numbers as Bush at the next election.”

That “devout Christian” thing doesn’t seem to have panned out the way it was supposed to - the “covert Muslim” narrative seems to have a bit more momentum to it.

  153. McCain also warned about Russia - Big Brownie points from me on this one as I have been seen as a bit of a ‘nut’ on the issue last year! Now who is sorry about my opinions!

  154. 148. Fluffy are you feeling better now?

  155. 146 stjohn. I’m not saying it will not work but my first impression of Palin is marginal. And that’s before the vultures pick at her.

Early days, a bold pick, wise ?? time will tell.

    Banksy’s secret costs Labour dear

    What a bunch of t*%%er$! :D

  158. 1. Apologies for such a late reply. Having only read up on her for about 30 minutes I do like her stance on almost everything. I’m not a Christian but believe in most values and as a gay man I actually side with her views that there should not be gay marriage - only unions. (I’ve been told many times that I’m a useless gay - mainly due to this post: http://therightstudent.com/2008/08/homophobic-attacks-vs-equality.html )

She seems like a woman who stands up for what she believes in, fights corruption and is not afraid to appoint or praise Democrats and independents.

A politician we can all look up to.

  159. More Palin commentary from the “right-wing” AP:

“The contrast between the two announcements was remarkable — Obama, 47, picked a 65-year-old running mate with long experience in government and a man whom he said was qualified to be president. McCain, 72, chose a 44-year-old running mate who until recently was the mayor of small-town Wasilla, Alaska — and made no claim she was ready to sit in the Oval Office”
